Biography

Mary Bullen Irvine was born on February 26, 1788 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania.[1] She was the daughter of Dr. William Irvine[2] and Ann Callender. -

At the age of 17, Mary married Charles William Lewis on October 4, 1805, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was about 25.[3][4][5] They had seven children - William Irvine (died in 1836 at the Alamo), Thomas Alexander, Ann Callender, Agnes Elizabeth Dunant, Mary Balfour, Armstrong J., and Callender Irvine.[6][7]

Mary was distraught by the death of her oldest son William, who died defending the Alamo. On October 21, 1840, a letter she wrote was printed in the Telegraph and Texas Review, begging for some memento of her son. A letter was sent in response to Mary's request (allegedly by Texan General Sam Houston), reporting that nothing of the possessions of the defenders were preserved. A piece of the Alamo ruins was given to Mary in which the name of her son was engraved on a small carved monument.[8]

Mary died on January 31, 1847, in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania.[9][10][1]
