Paula was born in autumn 1888, the second daughter and fourth child of Paulus Irving and Diana Hamley.[1] Two of her elder siblings had passed away in infancy, with surviving brother Edward Bruce born three years prior. Brother Beaufin[2] and sister Diana were subsequently added to the family, while living at 47 Cook Street (after 1907 addressed as 622 Cook, the SW corner at Richardson, now low-rise apartments) in Victoria.[3]
Like many of the Victoria middle-class, Paula and her siblings attended boarding school in England, the 1901 UK census finding her school at 3 Landsdowne Road in Holland Park, Kensington, London.
