Biography

Sarah was born about 1852 near Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter of James Irwin, Jr.

For her time, Sarah received more education than most women, having graduated from the Nazareth Academy in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky, and then in 1874 graduating from Union Female College in Oxford, Mississippi.[1] Her belief in education was to last through her life.

Shortly after her graduation, Sarah Irwin was married to Dr. Cyprian Peter Mattingly on June 11, 1874 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bardstown.[2]

From 1876 to 1886, Sarah established and ran a school for negro children in Bardstown. That school seems to have ended with Dr. Mattingly's death in 1886.

She passed away on January 6, 1934, in Stamford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.

An obituary was published in the New York Times on July 7, 1934.

MRS. MATTINGLY, 82, EDUCATOR, IS DEAD

Headed Washington College for Women Before Turn of the Century

FORMER MAGAZINE EDITOR

Devoted Many Years to Writing on the History of Religious Orders in U.S.

Mrs. Sarah Irwin Mattingly, who was president of the Washington College for Women at Washington from 1896 to 1899, died yesterday at a hospital in Stamford, Conn., after a long illness at the age of 82 years. She was the widow of Dr. Peter Cyprian Mattingly of Bardstown, Ky., and mother of Mrs. William Brown Meloney, editor of The New York Herald Tribune Sunday Magazine.

Mrs. Mattingly is said to have been the first woman to be editor of an American publication devoted to literature and science, The Kentucky Magazine, copies of which for 1880 were on view at the recent Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. She was a frequent contributor to literary magazines and devoted many years of research to the history of religious orders in the United States.

Besides being a descendant of Colornel Robert Irwin, who served on Washington's staff during the Revolution, Mrs. Mattingly had three signers of the Mecklenberg Declaration of Independence as ancestors. She was a member of the Mary Ball Chapter, D. A. R.

Mrs. Mattingly's son, Judge Carroll Mattingly of Washington, died several years ago from injuries received in a football game during his student days at Georgetown University.[3]
