Biography

Joseph Isham was born about 1703, in Barnstable, Massachusetts, to John Isham and Jane Parker.^[1] The date of his birth wasn't recorded, but based on the corrected dates of his siblings and the recorded order of birth, he was likely born about 1703. Joseph married Susannah Swift at Sandwich on December 11, 1730.^[2] They had:

1. Abigail, b. May 21, 1732 at Colchester^[3][4]
2. Jane, b. February 2, 1734 at Colchester^[3][4]
3. Joseph, b. October 15, 1735 at Colchester^[3][4]
4. Susannah, b. February 14, 1737/8 at Colchester^[5]
5. Jirah, b. September 10, 1740, and d. September 30, 1747 at Colchester^[6]
6. John, b. May 7, 1742 at Colchester^[6]

Joseph and Susannah were a part of the west parish of Colchester, that is in Westchester.^[2]

Susannah died in 1745, aged 45.^[7]

About thirty years later Joseph married Temperance Calkin (who was born about, though likely eariler than, 1723 - aged about 'sixty-five' in 1788)^[2] in New Concord May 27, 1773.^[8] She was likely the widow and second wife (married 1753)^[8] of Joshua Calkins who died in 1770. She may have been Temperance Edgerton, b. 1708, as her brother Elisha Edgerton was involved in Joshua's estate (Ancestry).

Joseph died January 20, 1798.^[2] He was buried at the Westchester cemetery, and his stone and those of his wives were still standing there in 1938.^[2] A partial image of his gravestone was published in 1938, and the inscription reads:^[9]

Temperance died in 1801, in her 92nd year.^[10]
