Biography

Hannah Matilda Jackson (9 NOV 1825 Luzerne, Fayette, Pennsylvania - 11 DEC 1903 La Veta, Huerfano, Colorado) was the daughter of Joseph Jackson (1795–1892) and Chloe Watson (1794–1843).

On 6 Mar 1850 she married Jonathan hunt (b. 19 Jul 1822 in Vernon, Clinton, Ohio) the son of Hiel Hunt and Anna Blanchard.

Children include:

  1. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Mary (21 Dec 1850 in Linn County, IA – 8 Aug 1926 Santa Fe, New Mexico) married (1) Hiram J Swank (1850 - 1916); married (2) William T Holmes. Lizzie Swank Holmes as she was known, was an activist, writer and organizer for the labor movement. Children from first marriage include: Raphael Ashford Swank (2 Jul 1869 Fulton, Ohio - ), Gladys E Swank (29 Apr 1873 Monroeville, Ohio – ).
  2. Silas Arthur (19 Apr 1852 Linn County, IA – 10 Sept 1910 Cook County, IL) married in 1883 (1) Rebecca Northham; in 1905 (2) Emile Colvin. Two children are known.
  3. Lillian D (16 Mar 1854 in Read Township, Ohio – 28 Feb 1929 Los Angeles, CA) married Courtland White (1849-1905). Both Lillian and Courtland were activists in the Populist movement of the late nineteenth century. She was associate editor of a Populist newspaper in Topeka, Kansas, in 1893. She also served as a temporary editor and publisher of a newspaper called Lucifer the Lightbearer while its regular editor was imprisoned in 1892. Two children are known: Edith P (3 Aug 1883 Chicago, Illinois – 26 Aug 1967 San Gabriel, CA) married Jonathan Mayo Crane (1856-1913); and Lynn Arthur (24 Apr 1886 Halstead, KS – 24 Mar 1955 Los Angeles) married (1) Elvia Burns (1891-1922), (2) Elsa R Larson (1897-).
  4. Charles Fremont (1 Nov 1856 Genoa, Ohio – ) married (1) Grace Grinnell, (2) Annie W. There were two persons named Charles Fremont Hunt – one died in Indiana in 1926, the other was living in Los Angeles in 1930 and married to Annie W, born in 1864 in Ohio. Our Charles appears to be the one that was in Los Angeles and died after 1930. Four children with first wife.

  • 1860[3]: Woodville Township, Sandusky, Ohio, United States. Jonathan Hunt age 38 with wife Hannah age 34 and children Mary E Hunt 10 born in Iowa, Arther Hunt 9 born in Iowa, Lilian Hunt 6 born in Ohio and John C Hunt 3 born in Ohio
  • 1870[4]: Swan Creek, Fulton, Ohio. Hannah Hunt age 44 with children Arthur age 18, Lillian age 15 and Charles Fremont age 13
  • 1880[5]: Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States. Hannah J Hunt age 54, widowed, with children Silas A Hunt age 28, day Lizzie M Swank age 29, granddaughter Gladys Swank age 7, dau Lillian D Hunt age 24, son Charles F Hunt age 23, plus boarders


  • 1900[6]: Precinct 15 Chicago city Ward 15, Cook, Illinois, United States. Hanna J Hunt age 75 with son Silas A Hunt age 48, dau Lillian D White age 45 and granddaughter Edith P White age 17 (Illinois)
