Disputed Associations

Disputed Parentage. WikiTree reports parents as Thomas Jackson and Anne Hobson. Among the sources posted to the profile, only Edmund West's Family Data Collection reports a trace of such an association.[1] This association was not reported in 2005 by Robert Charles Anderson, or in 1930 by Donald Lines Jacobus. This association is disputed by WikiTree collaborators and the research reported by same. These parents were detached in 2021. See Research Notes.

Disputed Wife. Previously linked wife "Mary Abbott" conflicts with reports in 2005 by Robert Charles Anderson and in in 1930 by Donald Lines Jacobus--both report the name of Henry's wife is not known (she is _____ _____). This association seems not supported by any source reported on the profile; the marriage has long been disputed by WikiTree collaborators. This association was severed in 2021 with the note, she "can be reattached if any evidence is ever found to substantiate a relationship." See Research Notes.

Biography

Henry Jackson was born about 1606 (age 29 in 1635).[2]

Immigration

Henry Jackson was aged 29, when he enrolled in 1635 at London for passage to New England on the Elizabeth & Anne,[3]

xiij Aprilis 1635 ... The Elizabeth and Ann Roger Coop Mr. Theis p'ties hereunder expressed are to be imbarqued for New England having taken the oaths of Allegeance and Supremacie and likewise brought Certificate both from the Ministers and Justices where their abidinges were latlie, of their conformitie to the discipline and orders of the Church of England and yt they are no Subsedy Men ... Henry Jackson, age 29....

At the Colonies

After his arrival in New England, he settled first at Watertown, Massachusetts Bay where he was a lessee fishing rights.[4] Together with Robert Lockwood and Isaac Sternes, 27 February 1639[/40], Henry had "for some time" leased the weir at Watertown from Thomas Mayhew.[5]

Henry married, probably Watertown, about 1640 (birth of child), to a wife whose name is not known.[6]

Henry removed to Fairfield 1648/49 where he made an agreement with the town about the tide mill, he sold the mill to Thomas Morehouse 1653. He bought land there, 16 June 1650, from Thomas Wheeler Jr.[7]

Henry died before 21 June 1686 (date of inventory).[8]

Henry's wife survived at the time he wrote his will,[9] but was not referred to therein by name in his will.[citation needed][10]

Henry Jackson left a will dated 11 November 1682,[11] proved 22 September 1686;[12]

Disputed parents, Thomas and Ann (Hobson) Jackson. These parents were detached in 2021.

Ann Hobson, the wife of Thomas Jackson is otherwise identified as the daughter of Henry Hobson. She could not have been the mother of Henry Jackson born about 1606. Ann Hobson was baptised at Bristol All Saints on 4 Jan 1600.[19]

Anne Hobson, of All Saints parish, married Thomas Jackson, of St. Nicholas parish, at All Saints, Bristol, 10 Jun 1622.[20] The funeral certificate of Ann's father, Henry Hobson confirms the marriage of his daughter, Ann, to Thomas Jackson a merchant and sheriff of Bristol. [21] Ann Jackson is mentioned in her father's will.[22] Thomas Jackson, merchant of Bristol her husband; died 1634/5 not long before her father; Thomas' will names his wife/widow, Ann.[23]

See further, Anne (Hobson) Jackson (1600-aft.1635).

Disputed wife, Mary Abbott. Robert Charles Anderson reported Henry's wife as _____ _____.[24] Linked wife, Mary Abbott, surely refers to the "Mary [Abbott?] mentioned as the wife of Henry Jackson d. 1718 in New England Marriages prior to 1700. By subscription, see AmericanAncestors; works consulted as "Stamford Hist. 54; Fairfield Fam. 1:664?; Wheeler 492."[25] This association was severed in 2021 with the note, she "can be reattached if any evidence is ever found to substantiate a relationship."

I've started a profile for Henry Jacksons wife (name not known). [Still in progress] I was wondering if it could be attached a spouse: see Unknown (Unknown) Jackson (abt.1620-aft.1682).

Anderson only provides excerpts of Henry's will, and says that he gave his wife various moveables. There's so little information on her I went ahead and trascribed the relevant portions. I noticed a couple of details which may provide some clues.

  • Henry asked that sons Moses and Samuel each pay 3 pounds. Henry writes Moses is to pay "his wife" and later writes Samuel is to pay "his mother." Does this suggest that Henry had two wives?
  • Among the moveables bequest to his wife, "Alsoe the use of the housing and lands at town with table and chaires as long as she lives and not to meddle? with the household estate except the axe that is commonly called Dinahs Axe." Could Dinah be his wife?

The Will is available on Ancestry: Image. (Sorry, I'm using a library edition so can't create a sharing link)

Mary Abbott has been detached as Henry's wife, and can be reattached if any evidence is ever found to substantiate a relationship.

May we please detach Mary Abbott as Henry Jackson's wife.

This association has been disputed since 2017.

See profile narrative and the comment of 2017 below. ---Gene

Unless there is an objection, I plan to edit this profile.

Specifically, I plan to update parts of the narrative, based on Anderson's 2005 article about Henry Jackson, and to reference Anderson's work.

Have added a research notes sub section. Have also added categories, needs research and needs relationship check I plan to add a temporary needs section in support.--Gene

Edited to add: I plan to reorganized recent additions to the profile so that these follow the more typical PGM template. I will summarize the items in research notes subsection, and add the argument to a PGM type "Disputed Associations" section.

Edited to add: Have completed the update of this profile. Please see "Disputed Associations," "Needs" and "Research Notes" sections/subsections.

Hello PGM. We have discovered that the currently attached mother for this profile Ann Hobson was not born until 1600. She was baptised in that year at the family parish of All Saints, Bristol and both her parents were named. This means that Henry Jackson immigrant does not belong to this particular Bristol family and should be disconnected. Cheers, Elizabeth :-)
Elizabeth, can you put more detailed notes in a Research Notes section and we will break the line. How do you know Ann Hobson wasn't born until 1600? How do you know the Ann Hobson born in 1600 is the same as the one who married Thomas Jackson?

I've added notes here in the Research section. I have added all the relevant sources. There is a merge underway for her father Henry Hobson and Henry Hobson, which will bring the profiles of his three children together.
Thank you Elizabeth. I have detached the parents.

Jen, please add Project Protection so they do not return.

Hi Joe,

Thank you.

Might we please detach the wife, first? She has been disputed since 2017, see comment.

Unsourced Parents also need to be removed. Just because alleged father had a son Henry, it doesn't mean it was this Henry.

The wife cannot be Abbott. In Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700, it lists TWO HENRY JACKSONS. Here's the first one: JACKSON, Henry (-1718, Stratfield) & Mary [ABBOTT?], dau Geo.; ca 1680-90?; Stamford, CT/Stratford, CT. The second one is: JACKSON, Henry (?1606-1886) (cousin of John TEY) & ?; b 1635 (that means birthyear of firstborn, not marriage year),; Watertown/Fairfield, CT.
