Biography

'Ralph III, the son of Ralph Jr. and Obedience (Unknown, thought by some to be Lewis) was born about 1734 based on when he patented land, which fell into Dinwiddie County, VA. He also was deeded land by his father before his father's death. He was deeded land by his father, Ralph Jackson Jr, in 1765.

According to some, but with limited sources to verify, he might have been married first to a woman named Hanna, last name unknown, date unknown and, secondly, Martha ___ (unknown). But, the sources seem lacking.

In Chesterfield County, a woman named Mrs. Obedience Jackson, who died in 1788 as the remarried widow of Francis Mann (1728-1782), listed her Jackson children as Lucy, Edith (Edey), Martha, and Betsy. Her will was dated May 1788. Edith married Archibald aka Archer Mann. Lucy, before her 1795 death, had married an unknown Jackson and had a son named Stewart Jackson. Martha married Joel Cashion and appeared to have a daughter Sarah Cashion. Betsy was listed last and was still unmarried as of her mother's death and her sister Lucy's death in 1795. Most online trees list Martha as a Mann, married to a David Cashion, with NO evidence whatsover. In contrast, Martha JACKSON is listed in Chesterfield, VA records marrying Joel Cashion on 12/10/1785.

Perhaps, additional documents will be found to fill in the gaps, and to confirm all of the conclusions that have been reached by researchers of the southern VA families. There is reason to question older findings, unless well-documented, as oft-repeated inaccuracies are being replaced either by sourced facts or by logical reasoning based on the facts that are known to be true as of today.

Ralph Jackson III seems to have died intestate, as no will was found, but there is an inventory of his estate taken the 13th of September 1776, in Chesterfield County.[1].

Info from earlier research conclusion: His children are given by wife Martha (Unknown) as Lucy, Edith, Martha, Catherine, and Elizabeth. By Hanna, children are given as Simon, and Phebe. [2]

Ralph III married Hannah ??? and Martha ____. Simon moved to Charlotte County, Virginia, but the rest are untraced by Weitz-140. Note that no wife is listed by name, and the name Hannah is listed as a slave, not a wife.
