Jacob removed to Ulster County and became an extensive land owner. He was a magistrate, member of the Colonial Assembly and a Colonel in the Ulster County Militia. Jacob Rutsen was also known as Jacob Ruthzen. Jacob Rutsen was also known as Col. In 1680 he leased nine hundred and sixty acres to Dirck Keyser on the condition that Keyser should build a stone house on the property then called Roosendaal.
Jacob Rutsen was buried at family burying ground on his estate. He was born in 1650. He married Maria Hansen Bergen, daughter of Hans Hansen Bergen and Sarah Rapalje, in 1675. Jacob Rutsen died in 1730 at Rosendale.
Colonel Rutsen's daughter, Catherine, married Johannes Hardenbergh, and her son, Johannes Hardenbergh, second (1706-1786) succeeded to and long occupy the home of his grandfather at Roosendaal.
About 1830 the Hardenbergh land at Roosendaal was divided into three lots of two hundred acres each and sold, the lot on which the house stood being purchased by John Woodmancy. The latter's daughter, Mrs. Thomas Cornell, inherited the property and it was known in late years as the Cornell place.
