Maeycken married 1 Gabriel Anthonis. See notes under her 1st husband.[1]
Maeycken married 2 Jaack (Isaak) Marchal, widower born in Broborch, living in Bergen op Zoom on Feb 11 1626 in Bergen op Zoom.
Maeijken married 3 Lenaert Vels, a soldier under van Els, born in Hertals on Feb 22 1634 in Bergen op Zoom.
One of the earliest records we have of the Meeus family is the baptism of Tanneken, the daughter of Truytken Meeus, in 1602. Three of her siblings were witnesses to it. Maeyken is one of the witnesses too, listed under the others; it appears she was very young then.
Maeyken was baptism witness to many children. One was Elysabet Mareschal, daughter of her 2nd husband’s brother Cornelis Mareschal, in 1626.
Maijken Meeus seems to have been a courageous, strong willed woman. She was involved with at least 13 notaries between 1611 and 1650 – many of these seem to have been lawsuits. Unfortunately we don’t know what most of these lawsuits entailed, but at least we have the names of everyone involved. A fuller explanation of the notaries Maijken was involved with are given here; shorter summaries are given with the other people involved.
On December 14 1611 Mayken Meeus seems to have brought a lawsuit involving her sister Neelken Meeus. The central character seems to be a man who had died named Cornelis Smout (there were at least 3 of them in this time period, so it’s hard to tell which one it was). Perhaps he was Neelken’s husband. On September 5 1612 a Maijken Cornelis brought a suit that involved Maijken Meeus and her deceased sister Neelken. Once again it included the deceased Cornelis Smout and his son Cornelis Cornelisen Smout, a wagon maker.
Maijken Meeus seems to have been one of those bringing some kind of suit to the courts on May 31 1628. Her husband Isaacq Marichael and sister Geertruijt Meeus seem to have been involved in it. Two men involved in it, Henrick Cornelissen and Meeus Henrickssen, a beer porter (bierkruijer), were deceased.
On March 16, 1629 Constantia Marichael and her possible husband Adriaen Straetmans seem to have started working on the estate of her brother Isaacq who recently died, including her brothers Cornelis (a carpenter from Bergen op Zoom) and Anthonij (a saddlemaker from Vlissingen) and sister-in-law Maeijken Meeus, among others. They continued work on it the next day, and on March 18 1629, they seem to have settled Isaacq’s estate.
On June 20 1642, the children of Gabriel Anthonissen (Anthony, Gabriel, Maijken and Tanneken) and his surviving wife Maijken Meeus along with some others were involved in a case that also involved Geertruyt Meeus, Adriaen Straetmans, deceased Gabriel Anthonissen, deceased Meeus Henrickssen (beer porter), Pieter Specht (apparently the new beer porter who had other connections with the family) and deceased Adriaen Dapel among many others. This was a very long list and obviously involved many more than just our family. It may have been the division of his estate.
On January 27 1643 Maijken Meeus and her husband Leendert Sels were involved with a suit that wasn’t settled until March 5 in Ten Cate.
Also on January 27 1643, Maijken Meeus with her deceased husband Gabriel Anthonissen (carpenter) and her present husband Lenaert Fels and her children Gabriel Gabriels, Tanneken Gabriels, Maijken Gabriels (with her deceased husband Adriaen van Daple, knight under de Talmond), Anthony Gabriels (carpenter) and a handful of other people who might or not be related (Pieter Specht, Joos Pooij, the widow of Jan Bloncke) held a suit.
On March 10 1643 Lenaert Sels held a suit with Maijken Gabriels and her deceased husband Adriaen van Daple and her deceased grandfather Meeus Henrickssen.
Maijken Meeus, on January 14 and 21 1648, brought a suit along with her daughter Maijken Gabriels and Adriaen Straetmans which also involved her deceased husband Anthonij Gabrielssen (carpenter) and present husband Lenaert Fels, her daughter Tanneken Gabriels and her husband Jan an Oldenborch (knight under Verucius), her sons Anthonij Gabrielssen (carpenter) and Gabriel Gabrielssen (soldier under Ruijsch), Pieter Specht (bread baker), and Maijken Gabriels’ deceased husband Adriaen van Dorpel and current husband Quiryn Notebooms (soldier under Ruijsch).
It seems that Maijken Meeus resurrected a lawsuit on December 15 1650 from a past decade. It wasn’t completed until January 5 1651 in Ten Cate. She was joined by daughters Maijken and Tanneken Gabriels and her present husband Leonaert Fels. Others involved included Maijken Meeus’ deceased husband Gabriel Anthonissen and deceased father Meeus Henrickssen (old beer porter), her daughters’ husbands Quirijn Nooteboom (soldier under Ruijsch) and Jan van Oldenborch (knight under Veruaus), and her sons Anthonij Gabrielssen (carpenter) and Gabriel Gabrielssen (bread baker). Other people with no connection to ours were also involved, as was Anthonij Molkeman, the deceased notary from a few decades before. So this may have involved more than one lawsuit. Even Michiel Hackaert (a high ranking official called “ondermajoor”, maybe junior major?) was involved.
