From Denmark to Idaho

Census data indicated that the family emigrated in 1881.[8] They left Copenhagen, Denmark, 20 Jun 1881, on one of two ships, the "Hero" or the "Cato" with other Mormon passengers[10].

Within a few days, June 23, they arrived in Hull, England and were transported to Liverpool, England, where they boarded, 25 June 1881, the "Wyoming" with other members of the "Copenhagen Conference" They arrived at New York, the 7th of July, 1881[10].

"DEPARTURE OF THE THIRD COMPANY. - At 7 o'clock p.m. on Saturday last, the third company of Saints left Liverpool on the S.S. Wyoming, of the Guion Line. They numbered 609 Scandinavians, and 146 English, Scotch, and Welsh. Elders 19. Visitor, 1 - total, 775 souls. Elder Samuel Roskelley had charge of the company. The following returning elders were on board: - Samuel Roskelley, Thomas X. Smith, Joseph Goddard, G. S. Grant, Edward King, Isaac Duffin, and John Millar, from Britain; Peter A. Lundberg, L. A. Mariager, Jakob Hansen, J. T. Thorup, Mans Nilsson, E. 0. Bylund, A. Amundsen, from Scandinavia. We wish this body of gathering Saints every blessing calculated to make their journey pleasant, safe and expeditious."[11]

"After a successful voyage, the 'Wyoming' arrived safely at New York, July 7th, and the next day the emigrants resumed their journey westward [by train] and arrived in Ogden, July 15th. Here the company parted, as about half of the emigrants went to Salt Lake City, while the rest either remained in Ogden, or went north. One child died on the cars while journeying through the States..."[12]

The family members who made this exciting journey were Jacob (46) and Ingeborg (44) Jakobsen, their children: Ane Sophie (15), Joseph George (11), Wilhelm Isak (9), Daniel Waldemar (4), Dagmar Elise (2), and child (1), who would be Elias.[13]

Obituary

"A PIONEER PASSES ON"
JACOB JACOBSEN ANSWERS THE CALL

One of the City's Most Respected Old-Time Residents Dies After a Prolonged Illness--Lived Here Twenty-Seven Years.

A severe loss, indeed, is felt in the death of one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Pocatello, Jacob Jacobson, a resident in the city for twenty-seven years. Always a pleasant man to meet, a genial, generous, good man and citizen of the community, it will seem strange not to see his familiar face again on the streets.

Mr. Jacobson was 79 years, seven months and ten days old when he passed away yesterday at the general hospital. For about two months he had been troubled with a bad septic ulcer and was taken to the hospital some time ago where he received every attention under the skilled care of Dr. Castle and everything possible was done to improve his condition, but he slowly sank until yesterday, when the sad end came.

He was born in Denmark in 1834, on December 8th, and in 1881 moved to the United States, six years later coming to Pocatello, where he has lived ever since. There are few men in the city who have a larger personal acquaintance, or who have grown up with the country and know its conditions and have borne its hardships as has Mr. Jacobson, since the pioneer days of the state. He has resided for a long time at 835 N. Harrison.

Mr. Jacobson has a wife and four children living, a son living in Chicago, a daughter, Mrs. Lena Michie of Winnipeg, Canada, and Daniel, of Montpelier, and Eli of this city. He was also the grandfather to twenty three children, now living. Wallace and Wann will have charge of the funeral and as yet no definite arrangements have been made.[14]

"Jacobsen Funeral--The funeral services of Jacob Jacobson were held this afternoon from the L.D.S. church, and burial service were conducted by Wallace & Wann."[16]
