Biography

Royal North British Fusiliers, 21st Brigade of Foot- later known as Royal Scots Fusiliers. Peter was listed as 'died or did not return' from the Assault on the Great Redan which began on 18 June 1855 At the time of his death, Peter Jamieson was a Corporal who had just become a Sergeant. This all fits with daughter's memories. Fought in and won medals for Alma, Inkerman, Balaclava, and Sevastopol. Stationed at Edinburgh Castle when married, and certainly when daughter young. Mary Sarah remembered playing in the environs of Edinburgh Castle, (one of about 5 things we had to begin our search). The lodgings of wife Sarah and daughter Mary were indeed within two blocks of the Castle, and can still be seen at street level on Goofle Earth - 108 and 131 George Street, Edinburgh.

I have only one doubt that this is the correct Peter Jamieson. Another Peter Jamieson (2) survived Crimea, only to die of the rheumatism caused by exposure in the trenches. This Peter (2) was discharged from the Argyle Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) 91st and 93rd Foot in 1858, having enlisted in 1837 Peter(2) was stationed in Edinburgh when Mary was a child, but he was not in Edinburgh at the time of the marriage of her parents. His regiment was out of the country for an uninterrupted 19 years. It is highly unlikely that he would have had leave for the marriage, considering the distance away of his regiment. My only doubt was sparked by the discovery that one of the boarders staying in his family lodgings was described as being an 'Argyleshire fund holder'. Was the lodging house a military establishment for the wrong regiment??? It depends on the military custom and the meaning of the words 'fund holder'. This Peter (2) was born Musselborough, Midlothian, in 1816.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
