Biography

Sarah Biles JANNEY (C. 1723 Bucks County, Pennsylvania - prob. d bet 1797 and 1804 Loudoun, Virginia) was the daughter of Joseph (1675 Pownall Fee, Cheshire, England - 1729 Bucks, Pennsylvania) and Rebecca/Rebeckah (BILES) JANNEY of Bucks Co, PA.

On 3 Sep 1742 in Makefield, Bucks, Pennsylvania, Sarah married John Hough, the son of John Hough and Elizabeth Taylor^[1]. He was born on 3 Jan 1720 Bucks Co, PA and died Apr 1797 Loudoun Co, VA. He was a Quaker blacksmith, farmer. surveyor, and land developer who moved quite early into the frontier section of Northern VA.

On 1742 in Bucks Co, PA John and Sarah were given a certificate to Kennett MM in MD in 1743, then moved to Loudoun Co, VA, and were received in Hopewell MM in July 1744 from Newark. It seems clear that all their ch were born in VA except Joseph, the first child.

1. Joseph (19 Mar 1743 PA - 7 Apr 1769, Unm). He may have received a 125 land grant in 1764.
2. William (24 Nov 1744 VA - 18 Apr 1815 VA) md 17 Dec 1766 Eleanor HITE (15 Nov 1749 - May 1823) and lived in Loudoun Co as a surveyor and farmer. He helped develop the town of Waterford. Ch were John; Joseph; Thomas; Samuel; Ann Elizabeth; Sarah; Nancy H.; William Hite; Eleanor; Benjamin; and Amasa. He was on 1769, 1771, and 1772 tax and rental rolls for Loudoun Co.
3. Elizabeth (24 Sep 1746 VA - 21 Mar 1844) md on 25 Feb 1770 Samuel CANBY and had two CANBY ch: Benjamin Hough and John Hough. Elizabeth HOUGH was on 1769 and 1771 rental rolls for Loudoun Co, but this may have been another person. In 1766, Elizabeth HOUGH had a land grant of 405 acres.
4. Amos (27 Dec 1748 Loudoun, VA - 11 Mar 1798 Washington Co, PA) on 10 Apr 1771 md Elizabeth WILSON and lived in Loudoun Co, PA, and Washington Co, PA. Their ch were Sarah; Benjamin; Thomas; Elizabeth; Ann; John; Joseph; Ruth; Mary; and Susannah. Most of the ch moved on into OH.
5. John (23 Nov 1751 VA - Apr 1789 VA) md on 29 Apr 1772 Lydia HOLLINGSWORTH (27 Oct 1752 - c 1832) and lived in Loudoun Co. Their ch were Isaac; Elizabeth; Mary; Rachel; Sarah; and Samuel.
6. Samuel (20 Nov 1753 VA - Aug 1823 VA) on 29 Apr 1783 md Ann STABLER and lived in Loudoun Co. Ch were Sarah; Ann H.; Mary Elizabeth; Juliet; Edward S.; Robert R.; John; Jefferson; and Samuel.
7. Mahlon (8 Jene 1756 - 1822 Alexandria, DC) on 6 Mar 1782 md Mary STABLER (1765 - ), sister of Ann who md Samuel HOUGH. They lived in Alexandria, which was then in the District of Columbia. Ch were Amelia; Mary M.; George; Robinson; and Edward.
8. Jonah (7 Oct 1758 VA - 1820 OH) on 13 Nov 1803 md Pleasant HAGUE and moved to Belmont Co, OH. They had at least two sons, Israel Janney and James M. Records are lost in 1834 when this family joined the Hicksites.
9. Sarah (15 Apr 1763 VA - 1 Jul 1803) on 23 Dec 1787 md Abraham B. T. MASON.

John HOUGH established the large HOUGH colony in Loudoun Co, VA, which rivaled that of Bucks Co, PA. About 1760, John built "Corby Hall" as his home, and it was still standing in 1975. Several HOFF, HUFF, and HOUCK families, seeing the prominence John had attained, adopted the HOUGH spelling and likely the "huff" phonetic.

One John HOUGH served as Sergeant in Capt William Sanford's Comp, 2nd Regt, Continental Forces, commanded by Alexander Spotwood. This was unlikely this John HOUGH, as the service is not mentioned in Quaker minutes. (Since the Quakers were opposed to war, most who served were dismissed.) It was probably this John HOUGH, however, who contributed material goods to the Rev. Cause.

Lineage is John and Sarah (Janney) of PA and VA; John and Elizabeth (Taylor) of Bucks Co, PA; Richard and Marjory (Clowes) of England and PA.
