Possible Siblings

Jans(e) was a common patronymic in New Amsterdam / New York during the 1600s, but here are some possible family connections:

Rachel Jan is possibly a brother of Paulus Janse (alias Powelyn Janse) whose son Arnout was carried away to Canada in the same 1690 Schenectady Massacre which killed Rachel:

DRC records (New York) hint at possible family connections among parents & witnesses:

  • Davidszen, Jan, j. m. Uyt Sweden, aen de Deutelbay, en Jannetje Jans, j. d. Van Leyden, aen de bouwerye, banns 11 Jun 1676, married 5 Jul 1676
  • Davidszen, Jan, Jennetje Jans, Marie, 2 May 1677 (Jan Homs, Maria Jans)
  • Davidszen, Jan, Jannetie Jans, Jan, 29 May 1680 (Jan Willemszen, Apollonia Cornelis)
  • Davidszen, Jan, Jannetie Jans, David, 31 Mar 1683 (David Davidszen, Rachel Jans)
  • Davidszen, Jan, Jannetje Jans, Pieter, 3 Feb 1686 (Jacob Willemszen, Magdaleena Jans)

Many Janse families are listed in this 1697 census of Rensselaerswyck (near Albany):

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rachel by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rachel:

Any primary sources for her birth name and location? (picking up on Carrie Quackenbush's comment below)

I don't see any good reason to delay these three merges, even without source. They all have the same patronym Jans, and people are starting to try to merge later descendants on this line, with some parental conflicts, so this branch need to get resolved in the older generation profiles here.

I didn't see a single source for this woman. David's wife was also killed in the Schenectady massacre but she is only referred to as his wife.
