Biography

Baudouin Izaak Jansen was born on February 19, 1838, in Zuidzande, Netherlands^[1], the first child of Abram Jansen, 25, and Francina du Floo, 22. Between 1857 and 1860 he performed compulsory service in the Dutch military.

He married Maria Le Mahieu on July 7, 1861 in Retranchement, Zeeland Netherlands.vThey had eight sons and one daughter between 1861 and 1881, six sons survived childhood.

In late December 1866 Baudouin and Maria emigrated to Ontario County, New York, USA, on the General McClellan, with three children^[2]. The youngest of the three, 11-month-old Jakob, died at sea. His parents and siblings followed him and emigrated to New York within a few years. After coming to the U.S., the family surname changed to "Johnson". Baudouin became known as "Ben". Maria became "Mary".

Mayje Jansen 1867-1870

The 1870 census shows the family living in Manchester, Ontario County, New York. Ben was a farm laborer. He and Mary had four children: Abram 8 (b. Holland), Isaac 6 (b. Holland), Jacob 3 (b. NY), and infant John (b. NY).^[3]

The June 1, 1875 New York Census shows the Bane (Ben) 36, a farmer, and Mary 33 living Manchester, Ontario, New York. The household included Abram 13, Jacob 7, John 5, and Lewis 1.^[4]

By 1880 the family had moved to Walworth, Wayne, New York and were living near Ben's family. The 1880 census shows Bony (Ben) 42, farmer, and Mary 38 with four children living at home: Jacob 12, John 10, Lewis 7, Isaac 1. ^[5]

In 1881, Ben's youngest son, Edward, was born in Walworth. Sometime after Edward's birth and before Ben's oldest son was married in 1891, Ben and Mary and their children moved to Barry County, Michigan. Descendants have heard that the Johnson family were attracted to Michigan by the fruit farming opportunities.

The 1894 Michigan Census shows the family living in Orangeville Township, Barry, Michigan. Benjamin 56, a farmer, and Mary 52 lived with sons Isaac 15 and Edward 12. ^[6]

The 1900 US Census records the family living still living in Orangeville. Benjamin Johnson 62 was a farmer and Mary Johnson the mother of nine children, six living. The only child remaining at home was Edward 18, a farm laborer.^[7]

Mary Le Mahieu Johnson died in 1906 at age 64. Ben then married Sarah Lewis Bunting on May 24, 1909, in Barry County, Michigan.

In 1910 Ben was working as a laborer and living in Barry, Barry, Michigan with his second wife Sarah, age 63, b. in Germany, mother of 10 children by previous marriages, four living.^[8]

He died on February 2, 1914 at age 75 of Broncho pneumonia in Delton, Barry, Michigan ^[9] and was buried in Prairieville, Michigan.
