Biography

Spouse

This is the profile for the wife of Edward Morgan. He was born in Wales - birth estimate 1660. He emigrated to Philadelphia Co., PA, later living in the Welsh Colony at Gwynedd, Pennsylvania. No marriage record has yet been found for him.

Name - Elizabeth

The second marriage of Edward's son William in 1731 in Gwynedd, gives his parents as Edward and Elizabeth Morgan. Edward and Eliza Morgan signed the marriage certificate immediately under the bride and groom.[1] Elizabeth was also a witness at the marriages of Edward's children: Elizabeth in 1710, Margaret in 1713, Alice in 1718, Daniel in 1718, and Sarah in 1720. (sources [1][2]) This identifies Elizabeth as Edward's wife for the period from son William's birth, estimated as 1690 or earlier, and his 2nd marriage in 1731. Is it reasonable to assume that she is the mother of all Edward's children.

Name NOT Margaret

Geni[3] lists about 19 children for Edward and 'Elizabeth Margaret Morgan (Jarman)', aka "Margaret Jarman Morgan" with births between 1688 and 1730. One of the children listed is Enoch Morgan whose 1741 marriage gives his parents as Edward and Margaret Morgan.[1] The child that is not listed is Edward Morgan Jr born about 1689. It is Edward Jr that married Margaret and fathered Enoch.

Children of Edward and Elizabeth

William Scroggins in 1990[2] provided a list of 10 children, which are proved through their marriages and witnesses listed on their marriages. (see 'Marriage Witness Chart' in images) Children (order of birth unknown, listed here alphabetically):

  1. Alice MORGAN, b. ______ d. ______ m. 17th, 8th mo., 1718 in Phila. Co., PA, Jenkin EVANS
  2. Daniel MORGAN, b. 1691 in Phila. Co., PA; d. 6 Jul 1773 m. 2nd, 9th mo., 1718 in Phila. Co., PA Elizabeth ROBERTS

The research of Stuart Baldwin in 2000[4] lists 2 more children

Other Morgan Families As one searches for Edward's children, it is important to realize there were other contemporary Morgan families in the Philadelphia area. The profile of Edward mentions brothers William and Thomas. The 1711 Will of Cadwalader Morgan mentions brothers John and Lewis.

Famous Grandchildren. Daughter Sarah is the mother of legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone. Many claim Daniel Morgan, who rose to be a General in the Revolutionary War, is also a grandson of Edward and Elizabeth. Obviously a family it would be nice to be related to.

Estimate Marriage, Birth Dates

The records for Edward and Elizabeth's children show only 2 birth dates: Daniel 1691, and Sarah 1700. Daniel did not sign as a witness to the marriage of his sister Elizabeth in 1710, but did sign as a witness to the marriage of his siblings Margaret and William in 1713. He was 19, underage, in 1710. Presumably then his 3 brothers, William, John and Morgan who did witness Elizabeth's marriage, were older. It follows then that

  • Edward and Elizabeth married about 1685 or earlier.
  • Elizabeth was born say between 1660 and 1670 (age 15-25 at marriage)

Name - Elizabeth Jarman ?

Baldwin states in 2000[4] "The same evidence that established this new daughter [Mary] also pointed to the probable parentage of Elizabeth, wife of Edward Morgan, who appears to have been the daughter of John Jarman, another early Quaker immigrant to Pennsylvania, although this remains unproven."

From Certificate of Removal for John Jarman and family.[5]
"Radnorshire.
Att o' mens meeting ye 20th of the 5th month, 1683. Whereas o' frind and Brother John Jarman of the P'ish Llangerig (Llangurig) in the County of Montgomery & Margarett his wife with their two children namely Elizabeth & Sarah are disposed to remove themselves from their pr 'sent dwelling unto Pensilvania in America."...

The Elizabeth in this 1683 removal (age unknown) is consistent Edward's estimated marriage in 1685. However, records of the Radnor MM in Pennsylvania show births of more children[6] including

  • Elizabeth Jarman born 16th of 9th month 1690.

Either the Elizabeth who came from Wales passed away before 1690, or...??
there were 2 John Jarman's in the area at the time. And both of them had wives named Margaret. That there were 2 Johns is confirmed by the marriage of Rees Thomas and Martha Awbrey, which both John Jarman & John Jarman Jr witnesses in 1692.[5]

Name - Elizabeth Williams ?

MableJaneStone1 on FamilySearch has suggested Elizabeth Williams, sister of John Williams was the wife of Edward Morgan[7]
First, a family relationship is shown through Morgans witnessing Williams marriages and Williams witnessing Morgan marriages.

  • Marriage of Richard William in 1717[8]
Morgan Witnesses: Edward, Elizabeth, William, John, Daniel and Morgan.
  • Marriage of John Williams daughter Ann in 1720[9]
Morgan Witnesses: Edd, Wm Jno, Morgan, Dorothy.
  • Marriage of Edward Morgan's daughter Elizabeth in 1710[1]
In Witnesses John Williams listed just above her brother Wm Morgan.
  • Marriage of Edward's daughter Alice 1718[1]
Jno Williams, Theophilus William, Catherine William, Catherine William.

Second, the 1747 Will of Anthony Conrads names his cousin, Daniel Morgan of Towamencin (yeoman) his Executor.[10] They are cousins through marriage in that they share Uncle John Williams, the brother of Daniel's mother Elizabeth; and his wife Aunt Ellin, sister to Anthony's mother Eunike. (See 'Cousins Daniel and Anthony' in images.)

Third: The passenger list of the Morning Star in 1683 shows
William Morgan and Elizabeth Morgan.[11]
This has been interpreted as a William Morgan and his wife Elizabeth. Browning[12] going so far as to say they had been servants, now free. But also listed are
Jones: Alice, Ann Reynold, Gabriel, Gwen, John, Katherine, William.
This is the family of William ap John/Jones, including Elizabeth's younger brother John Williams. A reinterpretation of the Morning Star passengers is then,
Elizabeth Morgan, with her young son William, came across to Pennsylvania, with her parents, William ap John and Ann Reynold and siblings in 1683 on the Morning Star. Her husband Edward was already in Philadelphia,

Parents - Birth Family

The parents of her brother John and therefore Elizabeth Williams are William ap John/Jones and Anne Rinallt. They came from Wales arriving in Pennsylvania in Nov 1683. Her father died shortly after arriving, her mother 2 years later. Elizabeth had already married Edward Morgan in Wales before her mother's death in Sep 1685 in PA, so she is not mentioned in the trust set up for William's (underage) orphans.

Considered in Jan 2024 Rewrite

- - Facts based on more than familytree sources.
- - The conflation of Elizabeth wife of Edward Morgan with Margaret wife of Edward Morgan Jr. The family tree sources used in the early development of this profile appear unaware there was an Edward Morgan Jr.
- - Elizabeth cannot be the daughter of John and Margaret Jarman. They had a daughter Elizabeth who was born in 1691 . Clearly, Elizabeth Morgan cannot also be their daughter, especially since John and Margaret would have been children when she was born.
- - Name - Elizabeth Williams ? Additional research on MableJaneStone1 suggestion on the FamilySearch profile at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LZXT-HTZ that Edward's wife was Elizabeth Williams, sister of John Williams.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

Does anyone know the primary sources Baldwin used to determine Mary was a daughter of Edward Morgan and Elizabeth [Jarman] Morgan ? And why he thought Edward's wife was Elizabeth Jarman ?
posted by Joan (Gardner) Moore
Having now added research that shows consistency with Edward's wife being Elizabeth Williams as suggested by MableJaneStone1,

I have disconnected Elizabeth from the Jarman parents.

posted by Joan (Gardner) Moore
It is impossible that Edward Morgan married a daughter of John and Margaret Jarman. See my article at https://genealogynut.blogspot.com/

where I lay out my reasoning and sources.

I have been rewriting Elizabeth's bio. I took note of your comment. See section 'Name - Elizabeth Jarman ? '

(answer obviously No). I traced her becoming Elizabeth Jarman to 2000 when Stewart Baldwin made the suggestion in 'Edward Morgan of Gwynedd, PA' 24 years is a lot of time for it to spread to a lot of trees!
