Morgan Jenkins was born in Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales.
This profile is part of the Barry, Glamorgan One Place Study.

Morgan Rees Jenkins was born on 21 January 1873 in Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales and was baptised on 31 August 1873 in Aberdare St Fagan, Glamorganshire, Wales.[1] He was the son of Thomas David Jenkins and Mary Jones.

He was raised by his grandparents Morgan and Mary Jones and is found living with them in the 1881 census[2] in 19 Greys Place, Aberdare along with his brother David. I havent worked out yet what happened to his parents, they both seem to disappear and I cannot find either of them in the 1881 census. He is still living with his grandparents in the 1891 census (5 Greys Place, Aberdare)[3] and training to be a blacksmith.

He married Mary Elizabeth Walters (probably in Abderdare - the registration district is Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan) in 1894. [4] My grandmother (Morgan's daughter) told me that Mary died in childbirth. I believe she died in 1898 in Swansea.

He then married Elizabeth John on 2nd August 1905 in Barry [5] (see certificate attached). They had two children Lottie Mary Jenkins and Deiza Margaret Jenkins (1908-).

Morgan served in the Royal Navy as an engineer, he was in both the first and second world wars. My grandmother told me that he was always away and she didn't see him that much.

He was assigned to a ship called the Seatonia in 1924 and I have found him arriving on this ship in New York 5 Apr 1926 travelling from Nuevitas, Cuba.[6]The passenger list said he had "damaged fingers". One of the last ships he sailed on was called the Clare Lilley. I have located him arriving in New York on 21 Nov 1941 having travelled from Loch Ewe, Scotland.[7]

He passed away in 1945 at sea on 21st June 1945 of natural cause at the age of 71. He was on a boat called "Empire Nerissa". Apparently there was a coroners inquest. (Probate date 29 Sep 1945 Llandudno)[8]

Sorry, Chief Engineer not first engineer and My Mother recalls Merchant Navy not Royal Navy sailing out of Cardiff

Hi, whoever did this research - well done! Morgan Rees Jenkins is my great grandfather. My Mum Gillian Price (Tucker) says her grandfather MRJ, a first engineer, hit his head in the engine room coming up the Bristol Channel back to Barry after the war. That was the cause of death. He was given a Masons funeral. I have just been up to find his plot at Barry Cemetery, Merthyr Dyfan, Elizabeth Jenkins his second wife is also buried there. No headstone. He was buried 26/6/1945 and she 5/1/1957. My Mum says he was the loveliest of men, very caring. I have photo of him in his uniform.
