FATAL ACCIDENT TO FORMER HUONITE.
From a recent, issue of the 'Taumarunui Press,' (N.Z.) we learn that William John Jenkins, an employee at the Pukuweka sawmills, but formerly a resident of Ranelagh, was killed as the result of an accident whilst assisting, in conveying logs to the mill by the company's tram.
It appears that deceased was on the engine at the time of the accident using the sand levers, as the wheels were slipping and losing way owing to the steepness of the grade. Both he and the enginedriver were keeping a sharp lookout for empty trucks which they anticipated might be on the line as a number of them had been unloaded earlier in the day. The trucks had been removed but one log had apparently rolled on the line after it had been discharged from the truck, and the engine, which was travelling at the rate of about six miles per hour struck this heavily and was derailed. The impact caused the firewood in the cab of the engine to be thrown forward and it crushed Jenkins against the bunker. The enginedriver was momentarily caught by the firewood also, but succeeded in releasing himself and then sounded distress signals with the engine whistle. Assistance for the engineman was readily forthcoming from other employees of the mill. He was taken to the local hospital and found to be suffering from severe injuries to the legs and body and loss of blood. He died shortly after admission to the institution.
Deceased married a daughter of the late Thomas Sheppard, and had a family of five children.
