Death

Died 10 Aug 1989 in 54 Davy's Street, Carrickfergus

Margaret Anne was born in 1907. Margaret Anne Jenkins in Monkstown NI. She could neither read or write as she went into service at age 11 years old. Maggie was educated in Domestic duties so well that as a cook, baker, seamstress and knitting and crochet she was second to none . No patterns or methods were needed she worked it all out in her head . She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her beloved grandchildren and a dear friend. She came to Carrickfergus when she married Robert (Bob) Haggan at the age of 16 years and lived there until her death in 1989 . Her family hold death certificates and grave papers where she is buried with her husband and daughter Meta at Victoria Cemetery

Memories: 1

Granny always had an immaculate home, there was little or no money but always a big fire in the grate and a pot on the cooker. I remember the griddle on each week with soda bread and pancakes. Us Grandchildren couldn't wait to eat them. She only lived a couple doors down from us and therefore we grew up in her house as much as our own, warm and homey is how I would describe granny's house. She made dinner every night for her neighbour Nicky O'Neil who was the park keeper of Charles Legg Park and I can still see her using the brush shaft to lean over the fence and tap on his Window with it, this told him dinner was ready. She boiled her bloomers in a big steel pot on the cooker and it always makes me smile when I think of it cos I can still see her poking them with wooden tongs then putting them through the mangle. She wore her hair in a long plait and always wore a flowery dress with an apron that crossed at the back, sticking out of its pocket was her purse and her snuff clout, she enjoyed a wee snuff, she used to send us to Dolly Callwells wee shop across the road for a quarter of snuff which came in a wee poke paper bag. Each evening she sat by the fire knitting or crocheting and taught me how it was done, something I truly appreciated even now. Her wee legs had chilblains caused by sitting at the fire so I rubbed cream into them each night for her. These memories of my granny Maggie I treasure, she was a wee diamond. God Bess Her x
