Location Notes: One record had her death in either Nottoway County or Lunenburg County, Virginia.[2] Nottoway County was formed from Amelia County in 1788/9. Amelia County had been formed from Brunswick County and Prince George County in 1734/5. Lunenburg County was formed from Brunswick County in 1746. Before Nottoway County was formed, Amelia County and Lunenburg County shared a border. At the time of her death (given as 1822), Nottoway County had gained a bit more land from Amelia County, but Lunenburg County's northern border had not changed since it was created.[8] Later generations of Fowlkes lived in Lunenburg County, but Joseph died in Nottoway County.[4] More research is need to determine if his widow went to live in a Lunenburg County household. However, DAR descendant records show that she died in - Joseph died before 1789; Mary died in 1822 - also in Nottoway County.[3][6]
Hanover County, given as Mary's birth location,[3] was where her parents are said to have married.[9] Hanover County was formed from New Kent County in 1720/1 and Louisa County was formed from Hanover County in 1742.[8] Google Maps shows the counties to be about 75 miles apart today. Google Maps doesn't have a "by horse" option, but it's about 6 hours by bicycle; about 23 hours on foot.[10]
