Extract

William Jernigan was born in the "mother State" of North Carolina and served in the Revolution. He probably came from Richmond County, North Carolina. There was a William Jernigan in that County, Fayette District, in 1790.

There were also Jernigans in Robeson and Johnston Counties, North Carolina at the close of the Revolution. (Jasper Jernigan left a Will in 1787 in Johnston County, NC)

After the Revolution but before 1796, William Jernigan migrated to the Mero District where he chose a spot in Robertson County, (then Old Tennesee) to seat his family. Even to this day the place is known as the Old Jernigan place.

He married Margaret Evans before leaving his native state. To them were born seven sons, and two daughters. One of their sons, born before they left North Carolina, 1778, was married in North Carolina and was the father of fifteen children. All but four died young. Those living to maturity were Celia, James A., S. B., and T. W. [10]
