Thomas Joseph Jernigan
The second child was Thomas Joseph Jernigan who was born 29 Jan 1823 at Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina. He moved with his parents to Sevierville, Tennessee, about 1829. Thomas Joseph married Mary L. Evans, born 26 Aug, in Sevierville, Sevier, Tennessee. Thomas testified in his war records that the marriage record is on file in the courthouse (records were burned in a fire). Thomas and Mary had eight children:
1. Sarah Elizabeth was born 25 Feb 1844 at Sevier, TN. She married William Boles on 9 June 1861 in Centre Valley, Murray, GA.
2. Nancy S.was born 9 Mar 1846 at Sevier, TN. She married Hardiman C. Fore about 1866 in Georgia and died about 1914.
3. Catherine was born 24 Feb 1849 at Sevier, TN.
4. Mary Jane was born 18 Nov 1851 at Sevier, TN. She married Henry Harrison Payne on 18 Oct 1871 and died 25 Sep 1896 from injuries suffered from a storm at Benton, Poke, TN.
5. John Jackson was born 1 Jan 1854 at Sevier, TN. He married Mary Louise Emmeline Cole about 1875 and died 8 Dec 1941 at Checotah, McIntosh, OK.
6. Thomas Pinkney was born 12 Jun 1857 in Tennessee. He married Sarah Elmira Moreland on 10 Aug 1876 and died 22 Mar 1935 at Ector, Fannin, TX.
7. Margaret M. was born 12 Jun 1861 in Georgia.
8. Alice Evelyn was born 3 Mar 1864 in Georgia. She married Thomas Bartow Smith and died and buried in Checotah, McIntosh, OK.
Thomas Joseph Jernigan enlisted 12 May 1846 in Knoxville, TN, and served with the Tennessee Volunteers as a private in Captain McGown's Company A, 2nd Regiment TN Infantry Mexican War. In a signed statement dated 16 Jan 1912, Thomas stated his wife, Mary, died 7 Oct 1907, that he did not serve in any prior service and that offers he served with were Sgt. Joe Bailey, First Sgt. Tom Watson, a McGowan and W. Bounder. He said he was 5 ft 6 inches tall, eyes were brown, hair and complexion were dark. He was quoted as being in the Mexican War during 1846/47 and discharged on May 15, 1847 near New Orleans, LA; a farmer in Sevier County , TN, 1847 to 1855; a farmer in Union County, GA, 1855 to 1880. According to 1880 census, Thomas was in Ellijay, Gilmer Co. and from 1880 to 1887 was in Coghill, McMinn, TN, where John Hatcher and R.B Womak stated 4 Mar 1887 that they had known Thomas since 1882-83. In 1887 through 1893 Thomas lived in Patty, Polk Co, TN, moving to Savoy, Fannin, TX around 1899 with sons John Jackson and Thomas Pinkney. In 1907 he was in Hitchita, OK, living with his daughter, Evelyn Smith. Thomas Joseph filed a claim of a survivor of the Mexican War for pension and in the testimony he stated that he accompanied his command into Mexico and participated in the capture of Vera Cruz and the battle of Cerro Gonde (Gorde). He stated on the pension form of 1 Feb 1893 that he was aged 70, afflicted with piles of 45 years of standing and had a kidney disease. He further stated that with the infirmities of age and the two diseases listed, he was totally disabled for performing manual labor. It was noted on one of the pension forms dated 2 Sep 1883 his company stations were Camargo, Mexico, on 31 Oct 1846; near Victoria, Mexico, on 1 Jan 1847; near Tampico, Mexico, 1 Feb 1847 and Jalaxa, Mexico, on 30 Apr 1847. Another claim stated that Thomas Joseph owned on 4 Jan 1893 and "still owns" a house and lot of land worth about $50 laying in the first Civil District of Polk County, TN. He also listed two beds, bedding, and a chair as his personal property worth about $30 and that he has no income from any source. Thomas Joseph died 16 May 1919 and is buried at Mt. Nebo Cemetery, McIntosh County< OK. Buried near him is son-in-law G. W. McDonald, the second husband of his daughter, Sara Elizabeth Jernigan (nee Boles). His father Isaac and two of Thomas Joseph's daughters, Nancy S. Fore and Mary Jane Payne are buried in Benton, Polk County, Tennessee."
