Joseph Jewell was baptised 1 April 1771 in Baughurst, Hampshire [1].

Research Notes

Three contemporary Joseph Jewells have become confused together over time. Facts for one have been adopted for others and sometimes dates have been massaged in some online trees to fit better with other facts. The common link for these three is the marriage of Joseph Jewell to Sarah Pike in 1798 in Chieveley, Berkshire and the births of their children in Chieveley and Kingsclere (Hampshire).

The three Josephs are:

  1. Joseph baptised 1771 in Wokinham, Berkshire
  2. Joseph baptised 1771 in Baughurst, Hamsphire
  3. Joseph baptised 1777 in Kingsclere, Hamsphsire

Of these three, the one who fits best with all the known facts is Joseph of Kingsclere, but this is on the balance of proabilities only.

Jewell-3707 is correct, his parents were Jonathan Jewell 10 April 1749 and Ann Smith 1738, according to parish records and Ancestry, Joseph did marry Sarah Pike on 12 January 1798 in Chieveley, Jonathan Jewell was born about 1749 in Kingsclere Hampshire was the illegitimate son of Elisabeth Jewell and Francis Lawrence of Berkshire, This has been well researched.

Jewell-3707 and Jewell-1143 are not ready to be merged because: Two different sets of parents for him. One of them probably married the person listed, but the birth years are different and the parents are different, so need some research to clarify.

Jewell-2789 and Jewell-1143 appear to represent the same person because: I believe this is the same Joseph Jewell as we both have him as marrying Sarah Pike on the 01/01/1798 in Chieveley, not sure where the child Ann fits in though.
