MARRIAGE and CHILDREN
David Jewell married Mary Sargent on 13 May 1751 at Stow, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.[2] They had the following known children all born at Stow:

  1. Ezra Jewell, b. 22 Jul 1752, Stow [3] [4] ; Rev. War soldier, Rank Pvt., Service date 19 Apr 1775 ; he m. 1st Sarah Marble, 4 Jun 1778, Stow, Middlesex, MA. who d. 1780 ; Ezra m. 2nd Sarah Conant, 6 May 1780 at Stow ; by 1790 U.S. Census they had relocated to Waterford, Oxford County, Maine where he d. 30 Jul 18__ (year cut off from broken gravestone) and was buried in Elm Vale Cemetery, Waterford next to his son Lewis Jewell. [source index card from "J. Gary Nichols Cemetery Collection, c. 1780-1999"] Son Lewis Jewell who d. 3 Sep 1852 and shares gravestone with his father Ezra. Caution death location error: The Jewell Register source incorrectly says he d. in 1795 at Stow whereas he established several mills in Waterford according to Warren [p.51] . ; Ezra's Will was probated in Oxford County, Maine
  2. Samuel Jewell, b. 11 Feb 1755, Stow[3] [4] ; ; m. Anna Eames, 3 Jun 1779, Stow ; Served in Rev. War applied for Survivor's Pension in 1833 ; he d. 6 Jul 1836, Waterford, Oxford, ME. age 81 yrs

They are probably quoting p. 140 of "The Beaman and Clark genealogy : a history of the descendants of Gamaliel Beaman and Sarah Clark..."
  4. John Jewell, b. 23 Apr 1759, Stow[3] [4] ; m. Elizabeth Whitcomb, 22 Feb 1785, Stow [m. intention recorded 16 Feb 1784, Stow] ; Served in Rev. War [Mass. 7. David Jewell (Jr.), b. 9 Mar 1766, Stow[3] [4] ; m. Mary Handy [Jewell Register] CAUTION: he shouldn't be confused with the David Jewell of Stratham, Rockingham, New Hampshire who was b. 1742

1776 AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE
At the age of 46 years David Jewell served in the American Revolutionary War against England with the military rank of Captain of the 6th (2nd Stow) with a service date beginning the 2nd July 1776, under Maj. Jonathan Hapgood. [6] He also served under Lieutenant Col. Aaron Willard's 2nd regiment. [6] All officers of these two regiments were raised to reinforce the army at Ticonderoga under General Schuyler.[7]

24 Oct 1785 Residence. Colonel David Jewell's name is recorded in a town accounts line item: "Col David Jewell then received a ______ ________ order for the abatement of Peter Wheeler Rates. [9]

In 1778 David Jewell is recorded in the Stow, Massachusetts Town Ledger as having "Joined and taken communion with the Church of Christ in Stow." [11]

DEATH
As with his wife, his death location and date are unknown. The death records and burial location for David and Mary (Sargent) Jewell have not been located at this time. One reason may be because, like other members of David's family, such as his brothers Ezra, Samuel and John Jewell, [12] David and Mary Jewell may have relocated to Waterford, Oxford County, Maine and died soon after. Waterford settlement was newly 'opened up' mainly from war grant recipients and town vital records weren't established until later. The town of Waterford itself wasn't incorporated until the 2nd March 1797. [Warren, p. [12]

LOCATION MISCELLANY
Waterford Township lands can be traced back to the original grants for the soldiers and descendants of those who served in the 1690 expedition of Sir William Phipps against the "Canadas" i.e. the French and Indian wars. [Warren, p.12] [12] Warren goes on to explain that "Most of the townships in Cumberland County, except for those on the sea coast were original grants for military services during the hundred years of French and Indian warfare ending with the expulstion of the French from "Canada". [Warren, p. 12.] [12] [note the Canadian Provinces did not unify into the Country named Canada until 1 July 1867.]

Waterford Plantation is situated near the Maine and New Hampshire border and was basically unworked forrest lands. It lies about 140 miles due north of Stow, Massachusetts. Permanent settlement began in ernest for this area in the 1780's.

Most of the early settlers came from around Bolton, Harvard, Northborough, Rowley and Stow, Massachusetts. [13]

In 1805 Oxford County was formed out of parts of York and Cumberland County. At that time Waterford had about five hundred inhabitants. [13]
