Research Notes

Correspondence 2009 Aug 13: Diane Miller Barker (descendant) wrote: ... Neither Calvin (born Feb of 1809) nor any of the children of this marriage were born in Amherst, NH as stated in History and Genealogy of the Jewetts of America. They were, all 12 of them, born in Dorchester Township (now Antigonish), Sydney County (now Antigonish County) Nova Scotia, where the family lived from at least 1809 until probably 1836 (after which the parents and 9 of their children returned to America, to live in Maine). The Joshua Jewett family appears in the 1817 census of Nova Scotia, where Joshua states that all of his children were "Acadian" born (meaning born in Nova Scotia). The baptism of the 11th child of the family, Sarah Sophia, was recorded (sometime after 1833) as the first baptism in the Anglican Parish of Trinity, Antigonish County, its having taken place on 24 Oct 1829 in the mission church (Christ Church Anglican Parish) at Guysborough.

Josiah Jewett never appears in Amherst, NH in any census as head of household.
