According to research by Göran Ekberg, a German hammersmith by name Johan Stam came to Karmansbo in Hed parish about 1576. He built a hammer there together with his brother Peter.[1] According to the obituary of the granddaughter of Johan Stam in 1693 the family came from Lübeck.[2] Johan Stam had three sons, Johan, Hans, and Evert, who continued the operation of the hammer after the death of their father (about 1615). However, their rights to the Karmansbo hammer were contested by the land owner Johan von Yxkull in Valstad, and finally, in 1622, the brothers sold Karmansbo to a wealthy merchant from Stockholm, Anders Hindriksson.[1]
Johan was in Karmansbo in 1597.[3]
One of the documents referenced by Ekberg concerns the sales contract between Anders Hindriksson and two of the sons of Johan Stam in August 1622. Efuert Johansson and Johan Johansson have signed at the bottom of the page with their housemarks.[4]
Evert Johansson lived in Norrtulinge[5] and was part owner of another hammer, in Skärviken.
Effvert in Norrtulinge appeared in court in 1639, producing deeds from November 1616 that had been contested since 1624; seems that his appeal was too late to be considered.[7]
In 1643 the household of Efvert in Tulinge consisted of himself, his wife, a son and one male and one female worker.[8]
In October 1645 Ewert in Turinge appeared in court together with Saalmon, Hans, Oluf and Påwel, all from Bysala, complaining about Hans Neuman's servant Staffan Hindriksson, who had started building a dam in Getbäcken for a new foundry without due consideration of the boundaries of the property.[9]
Evert is still head of household in 1647.[10] In 1652 there is no named person in Norrtulinge - just tick marks for man and wife.[11] In 1653 the head of household in Norrtulinge is Johan, who does not have a wife.[12]
There have been discussions in Anbytarforum about where Evert Johansson lived and worked: in Karmansbo and Norrtulinge in Hed parish. There are court records from 1654 mentioning his heirs, which indicates that he was dead by then.[13]
