On 28 Dec 1878, Carl Johan is born at Enebacken in Rättaregården Vänga, Älvsborg, Sweden.[1][2][1] He is the third child of J. August Olausson, a farmer and wooden shoemaker, and Klara Johansdotter.

At the end of the summer of 1891, his older sister Märta Elisabet says goodbye to the family, and travels to North America, joining up with her Aunt Sophia in Braddock, in the Pittsburgh-area of the USA.[1]
The opportunities must have been great, or the circumstances at home quite unfavorable. Less than 18 months later, in Jan 1893, Carl's older brother Claus leaves Sweden too, joining the family in Braddock.[1]
On 11 Feb 1898, young 19-year-old Carl leaves on his own journey to North America.[1] Likely he travels on a small steamship, sailing across the North Sea from Göteborg, Sweden to Hull or Grimbsy on the east coast of England. The Great Central Railway takes the traveller across England to the port cities on the west coast from where the giant transatlantic steamships depart. Carl sails from Liverpool on the S.S. Umbria, a steamship with a foremast sail, departing for New York on 19 Feb 1898.[3] The ship arrives in New York on 27 or 28 Feb 1898.[4] Carl enters the USA through Ellis Island. His final destination is Braddock, Pennsylvania and the home of his sister Elizabeth -- who has also paid his ticket fare. He has $3 in his pocket.
That year, the trio of re-united siblings sit for a portrait together. In Nov 1898, they send the picture with golden anniversary greetings to their parents in Sweden.
