Biography

Samuel Johnston was born about 1777 in Ireland. His parents were Scots; he was Scots-Irish. The Asbury Johnson Notes state that Samuel was the last individual on the Leon Morris pedigree chart to be born in Europe.

The surname was originally Johnston, but at some point, the T was dropped.

He married Sarah Pennington before 1804, probably in North Carolina.

The Asbury Johnson Notes state that the family moved from North Carolina to what would later become Perry County, Kentucky in 1817.

Samuel and Sarah raised their family on the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River about four miles below Buckhorn.

Their children included James (b. July 13, 1799), John (born 1802), Jane "Jennie" (born 1804), William (born 1806), Samuel (born 1810), Campbell (born 1811), Israel (b. 1813), and Elizabeth (b. 1816).

Samuel appeared on the 1860 US Federal Census in Perry County, Kentucky. The census states that he lived with his son, Campbell, was 85 years old, and was born in Virginia. However, some other sources say that he was born in Tyrone, County Galway, Ireland, while others say that he was born in North Carolina.

Samuel is listed as #154 on the pedigree chart in the book Morris Fork Kentucky: Family Stories and Genealogies from Breathitt County and Eastern Kentucky.

He died in 1861 in Kentucky. He is buried near his home on the middle fork of the Kentucky River, about four miles below Buckhorn.

Johnson-13364 and Johnston-5713 do not represent the same person because: The children are not the same; it is possible that Samuel Johnson/Johnston had a second wife, but there is no indication of this.

Johnson-13364 and Johnston-5713 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same son. Johnson 13364 is incomplete--but he would have absolutely the same dates, etc. they are definitely the same person.

Johnston-5713 and Johnson-42157 appear to represent the same person because: Both these profiles represent the same individual. All info is the same. I agree that the surname should be Johnston and not Johnson. This is my 2nd time requesting this merge, and I have since learned that the merge process will ask you which surname is correct, and you just click Johnston. Thanks!

Johnson-11692 and Johnston-5713 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse, slight variations in dates & spelling of last name but definitely same person.

Samuel Johnston Birth 1777 in Tyrone Co., Ireland Death 1861 in KY

From Asbury Johnson's notes. (Dean of Witherspoon College, Buckhorn, KY., taught at Peabody Coll.) Dr. Samuel Johnston was born in Ireland, came to Perry Co., KY. in 1817. Source; PP 11-1, pg 39. Family is listed.

PP is Pennington Pedigrees.

The PRA (Pennington Research Association, Group 7 leader) shows he was born in VA so there is some descrepancy on his birth place. Perhaps his census records state VA. I dunno. Mindy

Hello To All the Johnston/Johnson Family Members.

Governor Samuel Johnston is not related to the following Samuel Johnston, Sr. (I would be delighted and proud if he was one of ours, but I have researched this for a couple of years and have found no evidence of a connection.

If someone out there has DOCUMENTED evidence that we are related to the Governor's family, I'm sure everyone would be delighted to know.

Just wanted to let you know that Samuel Johnston, Sr., Governor of North Carolina, is not the same person as DR. SAMUEL JOHNSTON/JOHNSON, Sr. who lived in VA-NC and KY.

Governor Samuel Johnston, Sr.'s family came from Dundee, Scotland.

DR. SAMUEL JOHNSTON/JOHNSON, SR. VA-NC-KY, married Sarah Pennington, daughter of Micajah Pennington and Rachel Jones of North Carolina.

Realizing that Johnston/Johnson/Johnstone is probably the same group, Dr. Samuel Johnson (the way a lot of researchers have him; however, his son Dr. Samuel Johnston, Jr.'s headstone clearly has JOHNSTON as his surname.)

Hope this helps in some way. By the way, Dr. Samuel Johnston/Johnson, Sr. is one of my 4th great-grandfathers.
