Biography

Very little is known about the wife of David Maple Sr. We know that her name was Mary from the 1807 deed for the sale of David's land in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. T. Grant Maple gave her name simply as Mary ______ (with no additional information) in the Maple genealogy he published in 1993.[1]
In a 2001 update of his Maple genealogy, Grant added a statement that David Maple Sr married Mary Johnson, a tall Irish girl [2], but he gave no source for this new information. This is a curious statement, as we have no knowledge of Irish Johnson families living in the vicinity of Mapletown, New Jersey around the time David would have been married. In fact, most of the families in the area at that time were of Dutch descent. Irish families were plentiful, on the the other hand, in western Pennsylvania at the time David moved there, so one has to wonder if someone may have confused David Maple Sr with his son, David R Maple.
The birth year for David R Maple, thought to be David Maple Sr's eldest son, is estimated to be 1766. (The 1830 US census says that David Jr was 60-69 years old at that time, and the 1850 US census indicates that David's brother Ezekiel was born about 1768.) This suggests that David and Mary were married around 1765.
The 1800 US Census suggests that David and Mary had 2 children born after 1784. If so, Mary couldn't have been born much earlier than 1745. In view of the estimated marriage year of 1765, Mary's birth year is estimated to be about 1747.
Mary's year and place of death are unknown, but it is likely that she died in the vicinity of Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, where the family moved to after their land in Springfield Township was lost in 1811.
