Biography

Edward Johnson

Edward was born c. 1598 (age 26 at the time of the 1624/25 Jamestown Muster).[1]


Immigration to Jamestown

Edward Johnson was a Jamestown colonist.

Edward immigrated aboard the Abigail in 1621.[2] He was a yeoman and settled in Elizabeth City on company land, where he made his living as a tenant farmer.[3]

Residence in Elizabeth City

A census taken in 1624 following the Indian Massacre of 1622 shows that he survived and was living at Elizabeth City.[4][5]

A more detailed census was taken in 1624/25, and reveals that Edward had married and had at least one child.[6][1]

Marriage and Children

Edward's wife (presumed, although not named in the muster) arrived in Virginia aboard the Bona Nova, in 1621;[7] one child was born before the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster.[8] Children:

Strawberry Bancks

On 24 Nov 1627, Edward leased the land that was his home place and distinguished him as "Edward Johnson of Strawberry Bancks."

  • "EDWARD JOHNSON, Yeoman, of Eliz. Citty, 50 acs., being a parte of the Strawberry bancks, abutting Wly. upon Thomas his Creek parting the same from land of Edward Waters, gent., Ely. along the bancke of the greate river, Sly. upon the same & Nly. with a direct line striking up into the maine land. Lease: 10 years. Fee Rent: 50 Lbs. weight of tobacco."[10][11][12]

Death and Legacy

Edward died c. 1657 at "Strawberry Banckes," James City County (now York County), Virginia Colony.[13]

He left a will, leaving 2/3rds of his estate to his wife and 1/3 to his son, Edward Johnson, in era of 1652[12] or 1656.[13] Details concerning the will are found in York County.[9]

Edward also gave land to John Johnson and Luke Johnson.[12] Relationships unknown. Luke Johnson also left a will in England and died overseas.

Research Notes

Among the "Names of the First Planters Left in Virginia when Capt Newport Returned to England, June 15, 1607" was Win. Johnson, laborer.

Thomas Johnson was mentioned in the Nov 20 1627 lease. Edward Waters was an abutter. Edward Waters was recorded as Head of Household.[12]
