Note
Note: She received $150 in the will of her grandfather Nathaniel Johnson. The bequest was not made until 1866, at which time the executors knew that Agnes' surname was pond, but they did not her her husband's given name.
Her "A few reminiscences in the life of an old lady", dictated in about 1908, is the basis for much of what is known about her and her family. She attended a women's seminary for one year, c. 1839. She and Robert Hopkins went to Minnesota as missionaries to the Dakota soon after their marriage. After his death, she lived with her stepfather, John McDill, for a time but returned to South Salem, Ohio, in September 1851. Her marriage to Gideon Pond entailed her return to Minnesota.
Her youngest daughter Scintilla reported that she started teaching school at age 13.
Agnes had a friend Eliza Baird, whom she knew when they both lived in South Salem. An 1855 letter to Agnes from Eliza, who then taught school in Pittsburgh, survives.
Details on her Hopkins and Pond descendants were compiled by many genealogists, most recently Jeff Williamson.
Agnes was blind and had lost some hearing in her later years. An annual celebration of her birthday was the initiative for the tradition that later became the Pond family picnic.
