Biography of Andrew Johnson :

Andrew Johnson was born about 1776 in a predominantly German community in an area that eventually became Stillwater Township in Sussex County, NJ. This area of NJ had been settled in 1741 by a group of Palatine Germans and was still considered purely German for 50 years, a time period in which Andrew Johnson was born. Thus, the name Andrew and Johnson may be English forms of German names.

Andrew was enumerated in the 1800 census of Morris and Sussex Counties. In 1812, he joined Howell's regiment of the New Jersey Militia: Induction: SERGEANT Rank - Discharge: SERGEANT Roll Box: 111 Microfilm Publication: M602. And Company: MAJOR ANDRUSS' DETACHMENT (1812), NEW JERSEY MILITIA.

Andrew Johnson married Mary Anna (MNU) Shimp (1779–1847) in 1802. They had at least four children:

  1. John Myron Johnson,
  2. Dennis Johnson,
  3. Daniel Johnson, and
  4. Elizabeth Johnson Huff (1806 -1868)[1]

The children are enumerated in the 1830 Sussex County, New Jersey Census, the 1840 Sussex, New Jersey Census.

In 1840, the family had removed to Pennsylvania and is listed in the Pike County Townships, Pennsylvania Census [2] While the family was living in Lackawaxen Township, Pennsylvania, their that three sons of Andrew Johnson married three daughters of nextdoor neighbor Cornelius Dubois. Dennis married Gertrude Maria Dubois in 1859, John M Johnson married Charlotte Dubois in 1849, and Daniel Johnson married Elvina Dubois about 1847.

After the 1840 census, Andrew and his wife are no longer mentioned in the census; however, we see that his three sons are living in the same place (Lackawaxen, Pike County, Pennsylvania) in 1850 that Andrew had lived in during the 1840 census. We know it is the same location because most of the neighbors are the same.

Andrew and Mary both died sometime around 1845/7 in Lackawaxen, Pike County, Pennsylvania.[3]
