Obituary for Joel Franklin Johnson: Joel Franklin Johnson, 84, died Tuesday evening at his home just south of Morgan, Missouri. He had been a resident of Laclede County, Missouri, since he was 12 years old. He was a prominent farmer and an active member of the Masonic lodge for fifty years.

Rev. Self Jones of Grovesprings, Missouri, conducted the funeral services Thursday. Burial was at the Roper Cemetery at Morgan, Missouri, with the last rites performed by the Masonic lodge of Conway, Missouri.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Johnson, and eleven children. They are: Mrs. Mollie Cunningham, Mrs. Daisy Smittle, Lige, Will, Walter, Charles, Richard and Elmer Johnson, of Morgan, Missouri; Robert of Conway, Missouri, Harry of Mansfield, Missouri; and Edward of Portales, New Mexico.

The above obituary appeared in a Lebanon, Missouri newspaper in 1933. It is also reprinted in the Roper Cemetery Book 1856-2003.

The information on Find a Grave is as follows: Joel Franklin Johnson was born December 14, 1848 in McMinn County, Tennesse. He married Louise Catherine Hake. She was the daughter of Henry Miller Hake and Rachel Wortman. Joel was the son of Hickman Johnson. Hickman was born in Tennessee. There are twelve children listed for Joel Franklin Johnson. (Cora had passed away before his death. The obituary stated thirteen children were born to Joel and Lou but there is no mention of another name, leaving one to believe the thirteenth child was stillborn. No name given for the thirteenth child). Following is the information from the Find a Grave Memorial: Children of Joel and Louise Hake Johnson were: 1. Mary Maudeline Johnson (1872-1956) 2. In Volume I History of Laclede County, Missouri, an article written by Lois Roper Beard concerning "Pleasant Memories of Morgan", Lois states that there were eleven Johnson's who played a very important part in the memories of Morgan. "Aunt" Lou was one of the best housekeepers. Thay had a parlor with beautiful red plush covered chair and sofa. "Uncle" Joel was a trader. Joel Johnson rode "Old Bird", a little gray mare and traveled all over the country buying cattle. He could crack that big whip as he went along driving in a big bunch late at night.

Joel Franklin Johnson was born in Sweetwater, Tennessee December 12, 1848. He married Louisa Catherine Hake on April 23, 1871 in Laclede County, Missouri.

In the 1880 United States Federal Census, Joel is 30 years old and Louisa is 26 years old. They are living in Washington Township, Laclede County, Missouri. Joel is a farmer and Louisa is a housewife. They have Mollie, 7; Samuel Ed Johnson, 5; L. B. Johnson, 3 and Henry E. Johnson, who is probably Harry F. Johnson.

In the 1900 United States Federal Census, Joel is 51 year old living in Washington, Laclede County, Missouri with Louisa who is 45 years old. They have been married 29 years. Their children at home are: Elijah, 21; Walter, 19; Cora, 16; Harry F.,14; Charley W., 12; Elmer, 11; Robert, 4; Richard (Dick), 1 and Tam Johnson, 0.

In the 1900 United States Federal Census, Louisa states that they had 13 children but there are only 12 living children.

By 1910, Joel Franklin Johnson and Louisa Catherine Hake Johnson have separated. Joel states on census he is widowed but in the 1930 census he states that he is divorced. Joel lived with his children during this time.

In the 1910 United States Federal Census, Joel F. Johnson is 60 years old living in Washington Township, Laclede County, Missouri. He is living with his son Lige (Elijah Henry Johnson) who is 31 years old along with Lige's wife, Parlee M. Johnson who is 24 years old. Also living with Lige is his brother Robert C. Johnson who is 14 years old. Lige and Paralee's son, Samuel is 4 and daughter Rachel is 2. Also living with them is Georgia Williams, 25, listed as a servant.

In the 1910 United States Federal Census, Louisa Catherine Hake Johnson is living in Washington, Laclede County, Missouri. She is listed as 55 years of age and is Head of the Household. She owns her farm free of mortgage. She is able to read and write. She has had 13 children, 11 now living in the 1910 mortgage. Living in the household with Louisa Catherine Hake Johnson are her children: Walter H. Johnson, 27; Charlie W. Johnson, 22; Elmer Johnson, 21; Richard B. Johnson, 11; Daisy C. Johnson, 9 and a servant, Mable Jackson.

In the 1930 United States Federal Census, Joel Johnson is 81 years old and living with his son-in-law, Dave Smittle. They are living in Wright County, Missouri. The Census lists Joel Johnson as divorced. It states he can read and write. Also living in the household in 1930 was his daughter, Daisy Johnson Smittle, 29; David and Daisy Smittle's children (Joel's grandchildren): Dwayne Smittle, 10; Louise Smittle, 5; and baby Darrell W. Smittle; along with Joel's son and Daisy's brother, Elmer Johnson, who is single and 41 years old.

The 1930 United States Federal Census lists Joel Franklin Johnson and Louisa Johnson as divorced.

Family members have mentioned that Joel went and spent time with his children. He would stay with one for awhile and then move to another child's home.

Joel Franklin Johnson passed away on December 5, 1933 and is buried at The Roper Cemetery in Morgan, Missouri.

JOEL F. JOHNSON

Joel F. Johnson, a resident of the Morgan neighborhood for 72 years passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dave Smittle, near Morgan,Tuesday night at the advanced age of 85 years.

Funeral services were held at the Morgan Baptist Church Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. Selph Jones of Grovesprings, with burial in Roper Cemetery, directed from the Elmer Holman Funeral Home, in Lebanon.

The Conway Masonic Lodge of which he was a member, had charge of services at his grave.

Mr. Johnson was born in Tennessee Decembre 14, 1848. He was married to Louise Hake April 23, 1871. Thirteen children were born to them, eleven of whom survive. They are Mrs. Mollie Cunningham, Mrs. Dave Smittle, Will, Lige,Water, Charles, Elmer, Robert and Richard, of Morgan, Ed, of Portales, New Mexico and Harry of Mansfield.

MASONIC RITES HELD FOR MEMBER OF HALF CENTURY-HOME NEAR MORGAN Joel Franklin Johnson, 84, died Tuesday evening at his home just south of Morgan. He had been a resident of Laclede County since he was 12 years old. He was a prominent farmer and an active member of the Masonic Lodge for fifty years.
