Biography

I have increasingly serious doubts that this birth record is for a family member. While it is unlikely that a couple named "Royal F." and "Nellie Kelley" are not the same as those in my family, some of the data on the birth record makes no sense. The birth record shows Royal F. was born in Ireland when we know he was born in Maine, and the couple on the birth record are both shown as age 24. That would mean they were both born in 1863, and we know Royal was born in 1850 and Nellie was born in 1856. This could simply be another instance of sloppy record-keeping. On the other hand, Royal and Nellie's other children were born between 1880 and 1889, so this one also fits neatly into that age range. He is not listed among family members in the 1900 U.S. census, and, of course, there is no 1890 census to look at. So it's possible he died before 1900. We haven't found a death record yet. With no other documentation or sources available for this child, we can't conclude one way or another. For now, we'll consider him part of the family.
