My sister, Paula, was given the Salk (sugar cube version) polio vaccine at age 10 or 11 and like some others developed a case of the disease which caused her to quickly grow her spine into an s-curve so that her shoulders were offset to the left of her hips. The Masonic Children's Hospital in Houston operated to fuse her backbones together and install two stainless steel brace rods from her hip bone to her shoulder blade, one on each side for the rest of her life. She graduated from Liberty High School, in Liberty, Texas and went off to Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. In her second year there she met and married Karl Stauffer and because of her back condition she could not bear children so they adopted a baby boy and named him William (Billy) Jack Stauffer. She died early in her life at age 57 from Pick's syndrome which is similar to Alzheimers but is inherited thru her mother who also died from it. During her 3 to 4 years convalescence, Karl took wonderful care of her and was everything a loving husband could be. We still miss her, Johnny Johnson
