Hans Johnson was born in 1865 in what is now Oslo, Norway. His parents were Johan Olsen and Maren Olsdatter. He was about 20 years old when he married Mina Johannesdatter and they settled to married life in Oslo. A couple years later Hans was called up to compulsory military service and we have an interesting collection of letters written between Hans and his wife during this time.
In 1895, Hans, his wife & four children emigrated to the USA. Upon their arrival in America, Hans had chosen his patronymic Johanson) as their family surname. Interestingly, Mina's family had chosen "Berg" as a surname because that was the Norwegian farm where the first emigrating sibling was born - had he wished, he could have chosen his patronymic, which was also Johannesen.
The Johnsons travelled to North Dakota, where Mina's parents & siblings were living. Hans found work with the railroad and also did some farming. Over the next decade they moved further west, until in 1912 they were living near Jamestown, North Dakota. At this time Hans & Mina, along with their four youngest children, decided to return to Norway in hopes the economic climate had improved. However, times in Norway were still tough so they wrote back to their sons, who sold some cows to gather the necessary money for them to return. They settled at Medina, North Dakota to continue farming.
By this time their older daughters had married and a couple of their sons had moved north to the Canadian prairies. In 1916 Hans, Mina and the younger children moved to Canada, too, settling near Ogema, Saskatchewan where they rented a farm. Hans & Mina lived out the remainder of their lives here, surrounded by their children & their families. Mina passed away in November 1927 after a lengthly illness. Shortly after this Hans sold the farm and went to live with his daughter Alma Nielsen at Amulet. In 1942 he developed pneumonia and passed away on 28 January at the age of 77.
