Disputed Parents and Spouses

A previous version of this profile had Davy & Elizabeth Johnson attached as parents, without supporting evidence. See: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/680346/davy-johnson-parent-john-johnson-died-1683-andover-and-others Similarly Susannah Munter, his wife shown on FindAGrave, is actually wife of Edward Johnson, and has been removed.[1]As well, there is no reliable source for the surname "Asherst" for his wife.

Take care. Do not make a profile conglomeration of the several John Johnsons who lived in New England in this time period.

John Johnson was born about 1607, since he was recorded as age 26 on July 13, 1635.[2]

He married Susan _____ (unknown surname) by 1631. Susan was born about 1611 since she was aged 24 on July 13, 1635. She died at Andover, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on September 12, 1683.[2]

John Johnson migrated to New England in 1635 on the James (on 13 July 1635, John Johnson, aged 26, Suzan Johnson, aged 24, Eliza[beth] Johnson, aged 2, and Thomas Johnson, aged 18 months, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the James, says Robert Charles Anderson, citing Hotten 108. Anderson indicates his origin at the time of migration was Strood, Kent, England.[2]

A shoemaker, he settled initially in Ipswich, removing to Andover by 1657. [2]

He died after 12 September 1683 (wife's death record called her wife, not widow). Robert Charles Anderson names no probate for him.[2]

He was buried in the Old North Parish Burying Ground, North Andover, Essex, MA (presumed). A more recent headstone has been placed in the cemetery for John and his wife Susanna.[1]

Research Notes

  • "Savage suggested that this John Johnson was 'brother of Edmund, a fellow passenger, but it must be left for larger inquiry to reach certainy' [Savage 2:554], and he has been followed in this hypothesis by others. Edmund Johnson {1635, Newbury} resided first at Newbury and then at Hampton, and there is no indication of any genealogical connection between these two Johnson families. (Savage had no entry for John Johnson of Ipswich and Andover, and improperly assigned the 1683 death record for Susanna to a grandson of the immigrant [Savage 2:554-55].)[2]
  • "No probate record has been found for John Johnson and there are no birth records for the seven children proposed to have been born in New England, all probably at Ipswich. There is plentiful evidence for Thomas as son of John, given above. There is also direct evidence for the existence of Hannah. On 29 November 1664, Shoreborne Wilson and John Wilson deposed that 'Hannah, daughter of John Johnson of Andover,' was at a certain place, and she made reference to 'her cousin William' [EQC 3:226]. On 26 Septmeber 1665, 'John Johnson brought in his daughter Hannah Hutcheson and was discharged his bond for her goode behavior and appearance' [EQC 3:274][2]
  • "One record associates Thomas Johnson, a known son of John Johnson, with Stephen Johnson. On 27 March 1666, 'Court being informed that the widow Presto had put out two of her sons, one to Thomas Jonson and another to Stephen Johnson, until twenty-one years of age, upon terms agreed, it was allowed and Mr. Bradstreet to see it done' [EQC 3:309]. For the remainder of the children listed for this immigrant, we know only that John Johnson was the only man of that surname in Andover at the appropriate time."[2]

Just a small bit of circumstantial evidence. Ebenezer Davis married Patience Hutchinson (Haverhill Vital Records Marriages pg. 177) Ebenezer was the son of Stephen Davis and Mary Tucker Peasly. Patience Hutchinson was the daughter of Samuel Hutchinson Jr the grandson of John Johnson of Andover. Note the following deed abstract, Massachusetts, Essex County registered deed;

MECD 26-57 Thomas Johnson of Andover carpenter and Mary Clark widow of Ephraim Davis decd of Haverhill as administrator for the estate of Ephraim Davis In consideration of several debts and legacies paid by Stephen Davis of Haverhill and having received a bond of said Stephen to the value of 50 pounds to pay the remained of debt of Ephraim Davis to Stephen Davis the eldest son of Ephraim Davis all his land in Haverhill minus the small lot sold to Thomas Whittier Wit. Thomas Johnson Jr and Samuel Hutchinson 1692

The data found in this deed suggest that Thomas Johnson, carpenter, of Andover, son of John Johnson, along with Thomas Johnson Jr and Samuel Hutchinson who both signed as witnesses to this instrument, supports the probability that Mary is John Johnson's daughter. Thomas Sr would be Mary's brother and Thomas Johnson Jr was the grandson of John Johnson along with Samuel being the grandson of Hannah Johnson and thus all supporting Mary as the daughter of John Johnson of Andover. Anderson in "Great Migration" here: [1] gives no place of birth for this John Johnson. It says he "originated" from Strood, Kent and migrated out of London. It think we should generalize to England, based on Anderson.

Additionally, Anderson does not list a child named "Returne." He should probably be detached.

Are any of the PM's willing to take on doing a rewrite of this profile? There are several cut and paste sections (including from Anderson). Also, the list of children Anderson provides is a little more speculative than he normally includes in a sketch. It might be better to more clearly indicate which children are proven or have at least some direct evidence (I guess that's just Thomas, Hannah and Stephen?)

This came up as as I was working on the new DataDoctors suggestion for possible parents from FindaGrave data. It suggested Timothy Johnson as a son. But it seems clear from Timothy's profile that the PM's there don't find the evidence strong enough to make the connection. (I marked it as a false suggestion-so it shouldn't come up again).

If no one else is able, I'll take a stab at it if others agree that would be a good idea.

Anderson lists Mary wife of Ephraim Davis as the correct Mary.

In this profile John Johnson has two daughters named Mary with the same birth and death dates. If they aren't the same person and the profiles aren't to be merged then please disconnect the incorrect Mary. Thanks.
I'm on the waiting list for a book cited on David Johnson's profile. Anderson does not assign Davy any children (assuming it's the same person)

The "source" for the passage with the blurb about his parents is "Select English Marriages - US & Canada Passenger & Immigration List Index - Findagrave # 36810177" -- that's like, three sources in one. Where is a solid source for Davy being John's father? Other sites have William listed as his father. Just trying to have correct records :)
Johnson-27460 and Johnson-4388 are definitely the same person. and have the same parents but parents need to merge first.
