Biography

Maria was born about 1819 in London. She is suggested to be the daughter of a Captain John Johnson but no details are currently available.

She must have been living in Sydney, likely around Parramatta, before 1841 as she meets her husband, to be, Joseph McGuire. When he, and Stephen King, travel to the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales in search of cedar, she goes with them. She has her first child, Margaret, at the Clarence river settlement in Jul 1842.

The family must then have returned to Sydney to be married in 1846. The couple had a number of children prior to the marriage and they were Christened at Sydney during the trip there.

She married Joseph John McGuire, born 30 Aug 1822, to Thomas McGuire and Mary (Marie). His parents, Thomas McGuire, a wheelwright, and Maria Love, were amongst the early pioneers of the Campbelltown district of New South Wales. The marriage took place at St. Andrew's Sydney, on 10 Mar 1846.[1]

The family headed north again and was at East Ballina before 1847 as the are mentioned as living there at the arrival of the Ainsworth family under Thomas Ainsworth in 1847. Joseph built the first hut at Tintenbar. The family, at some stage, adopted Macquire a variant to the name and there are still descendants of this family living in the Ballina area.

Maria died 17 Apr 1892, aged 73, and is buried at Ballina. She is recorded at the Ballina Pioneer Cemetery although there was no stone recognisable during a visit in July 2014.

Family and Legacy

Joseph and Maria had a number of children. Amongst them are:

Margaret McGuire, b. 14 Jul 1842, Clarence River, New South Wales. She married, 17 Jul 1860, at Grafton, New South Wales, Charles McNeil. He was the son of Arthur McNeil and Elizabeth Donaldson, born 1832, at Liverpool, New South Wales.[2] She was Christened at Sydney, 8 Mar 1846.[3] She died, 23 Feb 1904, at Ballina and he died, 13 Mar 1903, also at Ballina.
Joseph McGuire, b. 29 Sep 1844. He was Christened in Sydney, 8 Mar 1846.[4] He died 1910 (NSW BDM). He vies for the first white child born in Ballina area along with one of Stephen King's sons. Some sources suggest he married Mary Ann King, a daughter of Stephen King, but this appears to be incorrect as he appears to have had no daughters. The Mary Ann King is noted at her death as being the daughter of Richard (King) and Sarah. There was a Richard King brother to Stephen and it seems likely to be him.
James (Jim) McGuire, b 1848, d. 1910
Thomas McGuire, b. 1850.
John McGuire, b. 11 Jul 1851, Emigrant Creek,[5] d. 1886 (NSW BDM).
Henry McGuire, b. 4 Apr 1853, Emigrant Creek,[6] d. 1882 (NSW BDM).
Robert McGuire, b. 21 Jul 1854, Emigrant Creek.[7] Joseph's second name stated as John.
Georgiana McGuire, b. 17 Jul 1860, Emigrant Creek.[8] Joseph stated as John Joseph.
Mary McGuire.
Jane Elizabeth McGuire, married William Campbell.
McGuire (F) became Mrs. McKee.
McGuire (F) became Mrs. Boot.
