Priscilla (sometimes "Persilla") Johnson was born around 1854-56 at either Pine Orchard in Whitchurch Township, York County[1] or in Scott Township, Ontario County,[2] both in Canada West. Pine Orchard was a Quaker colony dating back to the early 19th century.
Early census records list Priscilla's religion in childhood as "Friends",[3] or "Quaker".[4] This would change by the time of her first marriage, however.
On 25 October 1876, Priscilla married Chauncey Conner. The marriage registration lists both the bride and groom as residents of Whitchurch Township. The witnesses were Washington Johnson and Melissa (?) Conner. Chauncey's religion is listed as "Canada Methodist", but significantly, Priscilla's is listed as "Christian". They were married by a "Rev. Dowling".[2] This is the first indication that Priscilla has left Quakerism.
Priscilla's first child, Castalena, was born in November 1877 in Whitchurch.[5] Her second child, Jabez, was also born in Whitchurch in August 1879.[6] However, the 1881 census indicates that Priscilla and her family were living in Newmarket at the time. It also lists her as a "Christian" along with her children, even as her husband Chauncey is still a "Can. Methodist".[7]
