Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Johnson was a Virginia colonist.

William along with brother John and Alexander came to America in 1696 because their father, James Johnston had no property. He was the youngest in his family so possessed nothing of the family's estate -- Caskieben. Earliest recorded ancestor: Stephen de Johnston (or Johnestoun) married Margaret of Caskieben in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Ancestor William Johnston married Margaret of Fife and "fell on the field of Flodden" in 1513. Ancestor Willam Johnston married Margaret Hay and "fell on the field of Pinkie" in 1547. George Johnston married Christine Forbes and became a Quaker.

William was likely a Quaker when he came to America and likely settle in Virginia because he married Sarah Massie of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County Virginia.

William and John were not brothers according to Gersom Perdue- a well known Quaker that knew of the family history and grew up around william and Johns descendants - He wrote a letter of account of the family in 1880 when he was in his late 80s - Sir william JohnSton was a scotsman- John Johnson was a descendant of William the conquer - All of the mis information came from the erroneous Lorand Johnson which everybody bases these two from - They are not descended from James the lister who is the grandson of a Thomas of Craig- That James never left Scotland - A Dna test disproved John Johnson was from the caskiben line - Nobody to date has done a male Y DNA test on williams descendants- however it is believed that he is descended from a non craig cadet branch of the caskiben line that was here much earlier then 1698 -

MRCA 6.6-7.7 generations back.

I share DNA with every person listed when 3cM is applied. When 5cM is applied it shows estimated generations back to MCRA.

Looking for paternal line of Thomas Johnston--- Oslow, NC to Newberry, SC.

I removed PPP because it was not supported by a project as manager (just a project box is not sufficient). If you feel that this profile needs to be protected, please contact the Virginia Project (probably the best option, although you could "shop around" by posting to G2G).

Cheers, Liz

I don't know if he was a Quaker himself but all of his descendants were, as far as I know. https://archive.org/details/descendantsofwil00john Maybe it was just Benjamin and his descendants?

Do you have a source for the likely a Quaker? I am working on this line. He and his son William after him have all of their kids in the St Peter's Parish records.

Thanks!!
