Ethel Mary Johnson was born in Waitara, Taranaki, New Zealand on 25th October 1873, the fifth child and first daughter born to William (Bill) Johnson and his wife Jane Williams Marshall. [1] Two months later, on 31st December 1873, Ethel was baptised at St Mary's Anglican Church in New Plymouth.
Nothing is known of Ethel's childhood but she married James [Jim] Dempster at the Inglewood Registry Office in Taranaki shortly before her 22nd birthday. The couple moved to live in Napier where Jim was working as a "benchman" at a local sawmill, feeding logs into sawing machines .

According to her death certificate, Ethel died at the age of 31 from "uraemia caused by chronic inflammation of the kidneys" [the verdict of the Coroner’s Jury] on 12th June 1905; she was buried at the Napier [Old] Cemetery on 15th June 1905. [2] She left a husband and five young children …two males [one aged 2 years, the other 9 months] and three females [aged 9, 7, and 5 years].
