Elijah Hedding Johnson, son of Timoth(e)y Johnson and Dimis Demmis Welch/Welsh, was born on 10 August 1807 in Canaan, Grafton county, New Hampshire, [1][2][3] or in Keene, Essex county, New York. [4] The two towns are not very far from each other. However, Grafton county, New Hampshire seems to be the actual birthplace of Elijah and his twin brother John, as well as that of their older siblings; their younger siblings were born in Essex county, New York, where the family had removed to in about 1809.
"The twins Elijah Hedding and John Broadhead Johnson were named after ministers in the town where they were born. The ministers bearing their names were found in Canaan, Grafton, New Hampshire. They were assigned to that district from 1804 to 1807. Information from Diana L. Goings's grandfather." [5]
Elijah wed firstly Clarinda Clara H. Flagler (b. abt 1812, of Poughkeepsie, NY) on 11 March 1829 in Chautauqua county, New York. [6] Elijah and Clarinda had at least six children:
Andrew J. Johnson, b. 4 Jan 1837 in Lenawee, MI;
Eliza (Johnson) Lansing, b. 11 Jan 1838 in MI;
Lovina Johnson, b. abt 1839 in MI;
Phebe L. Johnson, b. abt 1841 in MI;
George M. Johnson, b. abt 1844 in MI;
Melissa Addie (Johnson) McDaniel, b. 13 Aug 1848 in IN.
In 1831 Elijah became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Adrian, Lenawee county, Michigan. [7][8]
In 1850 Elijah is recorded living in Jackson township, Porter county, Indiana, nextdoor to Joseph and Esther (Johnson) Massey, and being by trade a carpenter. [9]
In 1860 Elijah and Clarinda are recorded living in LaPorte County, Indiana. [10]
Elijah wed secondly Mariah Flagler, alias Mrs. Maria Hutchinson, (b. abt 1815 in Watertown, Jefferson, NY) on 31 July 1869 in Windsor, Eaton county, Michigan. In 1870 they were living in Charlotte, Eaton county, Michigan. [11]
Elijah Hedding Johnson died on 8 January 1884 in Boone county, Iowa. He was buried at Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone, Boone county, Iowa, [12]
or at Swede Valley Lutheran Cemetery, Marcy, Boone county, Iowa. [13]
