Ellen was born in 1869. She was the twin daughter of James Johnson and Ellen Cameron.
In 1871 Ellen was living with her parents and 7 siblings in Speculation Place, Washington, Chester Le Street, Durham, England. She was 2 years of age. Also in the household was 13 year old servant Dinah Henderson. Her father was a Grocer and Draper.
Ellen's father died in 1878.
She emigrated with her mother and 8 siblings, leaving from Gravesend, near London on 15 August 1879 on the sailing ship "Hurunui" travelling steerage, arriving December 6, 1879 into Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand.
Ellen married Walter Edwin Parnham in 1891.
They went on to have six children.
Ellen and Walter farmed in Kaiapoi, Canterbury until Walter's death in about 1926. Their son Leonard took over the lease of the farm.
In the 1938 NZ Electoral Rolls Ellen was recorded at 15 Norman's Road, Riccarton, Christchurch, a widow.
She passed away in 1939 at the age of about 70 and was buried in Kaiapoi Public Cemetery, Kaiapoi, Canterbury, New Zealand. Plot Number: 1056
