Biography

Martha was born about 1830 in Alabama, likely the daughter of Simeon and Martha Johnson. In 1849, when she was about 19 years old, she married Joshua Hood in St Clair County, Alabama.[1] They had the following known children:

  1. James Hood (1851)
  2. William Hood (1853)
  3. Robert A Hood (1855)
  4. John T Hood (1856)
  5. Harrison Hood (1857)
  6. Ashburn (Osburn?) Hood (1859)
  7. Martha Hood (1861)
  8. Joshua Hood, Jr (1862)
  9. Wilson Hood (1865)
  10. Sarah Hood (1867)
  11. Dennis Hood (Feb 1870)
  12. Richard Hood (1873)

At the time of the 1850 Census, Joshua (22, AL) and Margaret (20, AL) were enumerated in District 39, St Clair County, Alabama. Joshua was farming and valued his real estate at $100. There were no children in the household.[2]

By 1860, Joshua (29, AL) and Margaret (29, AL) had 6 sons and had relocated to Itawamba County, Mississippi. Joshua remained a farmer, still valuing his real estate at $100.[3] They remained in Itawamba County for the remainder of their lives. The 1870 Census indicated that Joshua was age 50 and Margaret was age 41. They had added 5 additional children (3 boys and 2 girls), and the oldest son James was no longer in the household. Joshua was farming on land he valued at $300, and he estimated his personal estate at $500.[4] In 1880, Joshua (58, AL), Margaret (50, AL) and 6 children (youngest son Richard born ca 1873) were enumerated in the 5th District of Itawamba County. Neither of them could read or write, but all of the children evidently could or were attending school. Margaret indicated that both of her parents were born in Alabama, but Joshua's mother had been born in Georgia.[5]

Joshua passed away in 1885, and the 1900 Census shows the widowed Margaret (b Jan 1830, AL, parents b NC) living with son Dennis and his family in Fulton Precinct, Itawamba County, Mississippi.[6] Note that several of her children are enumerated on the same sheet. Just a month after the Census, "Margarette" applied for a Confederate Pension, claiming that she was indigent, living with her son, and without the ability to support herself. The pension was granted in September 1900.[7]

Margaret passed away in 1910 and is buried at Mount Pleasant Baptist Cemetery in Itawamba County, Mississippi.[8]

Research Notes and Explanations

  • Detached Thomas Johnson and Emily Parham as parents because they were born AFTER Margaret was born. Attached Simeon Johnson and his wife Martha as "uncertain" parents due to their close proximity to Margaret and Joshua in the 1850 Census (2 dwellings away). Later research may disprove this relationship, but it is logical and possible. FindAGrave indicates them as her parents, also.(Kirch-132 15:32, 9 December 2023 (UTC))

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:
