Biography

"Was Decendant Of Pioneer Clergyman" The Lyndhurst Shire Chronicle (NSW : 1897 - 1941; 1944 - 1954) 18 October 1944 Coombing Park Manager Mr. C. St. Clair Johnson, manager of Coombing Park, Carcoar, died within a few hours after being attacked with a paralytic seizure on Tuesday afternoon of last week. Mr Johnson, who was speaking from the Coombing Park office to Mrs. Hope at the homestead, suddenly collapsed in the middle of the conversation and was found lying on the floor in an unconscious condition. He was taken immediately to the District Hospital. He passed away about six hours afterwards without regaining consciousness, his wife being at his side. Dr. Cass, who was called in immediately to attend Mr. Johnson, warned Mrs Johnson that the end was inevitable. The late Mr. Johnson was the third son of the late Mr. R. H. Johnson Bank Manager, of Sydney, and some 40 years ago married Daphne, the youngest daughter of the late Mr James Todhunter, of Wattagoona Station, Cobar. There were two children of the marriage. The son, Lieutenant C R S Johnson, B.E., R.N., now on' active service on a warship in English waters has been in the Navy since the commencement of the war. The daughter. Corporal Sheila Johnson, A.A.M.W.S.. is at a North Queensland battle station. The late Mr. Johnson was a direct descendant of the Rev.d. Richard Johnson, the first Church of England minister to preach in Australia. The late Mr, Johnson came to Coombing Park some 11 years ago and, although his time was more or less taken up with his managerial duties, he was able to take some interest in local activities. He was vice-captain of the Mandurama Bush Fire Brigade, and was also a member of the Show Committee. He was 64 years of age at the time of his sudden and tragic end. The Revd. E. Pearce, Church of England, Carcoar, conducted the service, and the coffin was carried to the grave by the staff of Coombing Park. Messrs. Cam Reed & Son, of Blayney, were the undertakers.
