Biography

James was born in about 1835. He was the son of Thomas Oliver Johnson and Mary Edmundson.

He married Ellen Cameron on 27 June 1858 at Dock Street United Methodist Free Church, Sunderland, County Durham[1].

James and Ellen went on to have 11 children, including two sets of twins.

In 1861 James was living with his wife and their two young sons Samuel and Thomas at Mill House, Ry Hope Road, Ryhope, Sunderland, Durham, England. He was aged 25. Also in the household was 12 year old Scholar, Mary Ann Coulson.

Occupation: Schoolmaster

In the census of 1871 James was living with his wife and 8 of their children at Speculation Place, Washington, Chester Le Street, Durham, England. He was aged 35. Also in the household was 13 year old servant Dinah Henderson.

Occupation: Grocer & Draper

James was a School Teacher in Ayers Quay, Sunderland, England.

The family had booked passage on the ship Hurunui to emigrate to New Zealand in 1879. Unfortunately James passed away in 1878 at the age of 43[2] from Typhoid Fever. His wife Ellen went ahead with the family's plans to emigrate, arriving in New Zealand on 6 December 1879.

James Edmundson JOHNSON was born 23 September 1835 at Brunton, north of Alnwick in Northumberland. His parents were Thomas Oliver JOHNSON and Mary EDMUNDSON, born born in Lemington, Newburn, on the south side of Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England.

He was a school master in West Cramlington, then Ryhope, then they moved to Washington, west of Sunderland where he was a grocer/draper, then they moved to Sunderland where they had at least 2 grocer/provision shops, one at Ayres Quay and one at 2 High Street East, Sunderland. James died on 29 November 1878 of bowel cancer and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland. The next year, Ellen and the children immigrated to New Zealand and settled at Kaiapoi, with the son Tom arriving a year later after winding up the family business.
