From Homestead Patent for Margaret H. Caldwell finalized and dated Nov. 22, 1889 in a handwritten letter to patent office, Margaret states that her father told her she was born in County Down, Ireland. Her father was a Free Mason at Hiram Lodge, No. 42 in Jacksonville, Alabama, Benton County (which no longer exists) and he was a naturalized US citizen. She tells the patent officer to check the records in Talladega, Ala. She also stated that Joseph F. Caldwell was a witness for her and that he is George (her deceased husband)'s brother. George was born in Newberry, S. C. based on Margaret and Joseph's statements . The initial homestead application was filed Jan. 5, 1880, and additional information filed Dec. 7, 1886 with the Camden Land Office, with the patent being granted Nov. 22, 1889. Witness' were John Tackett, Sr., who stated he knew her 20 years, George Asbery Driggars who said he knew her 8 years and Joseph F. Caldwell.
