Liza was the daughter of Bill and Susan (Cates) Johnson, and the half-sister of Valmie, and Mason, Guy, and Amon Williams. She married her cousin, Grover Cates. Their children were Oscar, Cecil, Emma, Beula, Lottie, Opal, Edgar, Edna, Lucy, Kit, Valery and Russell. The 1920 US Census shows Grover and Liza living in Butler County, Ohio, where Grover worked for a gravel company for a short time. By 1930, they were back in Madison County, Kentucky. In 1940, Liza's mother, Susan Powell, was also living with the family.
