James Washington Johnson was born May 27, 1860, the eldest son of Thomas Gideon Johnson (1842 - 1905) and Rebecca (Stribling) Johnson (1842 - 1868)
James' father was a Texas Ranger. James's mother and sister, Mary were killed February 5, 1868 by a band of about fifteen Comanche Indians in the Legion Valley Massacre. Eight related women and children had gathered at the home of John S. Friend and Matilda Jane (Jones) Friend, about fifteen miles south of Llano, where the massacre occurred. [1]

James died January 28, 1901 and is buried in the Cavness Cemetery, in Streeter, Mason County, Texas
