Biography

William Johnson was born about 1740 to William Johnson and his wife Martha. He married Martha Coxey about 1764, presumably in Brunswick County, Virginia.

In the 1770s, several members of the Johnson family moved to what was then Rowan County, North Carolina. On 9 October 1778, William Johnson and his wife Martha, both described as being of the Province of North Carolina, sold 160 in Brunswick County, Virginia, which had been granted to his father in 1742 to Benjamin Britt for £100.[1]

William Johnson seems to have died shortly after selling his land in Virginia as, on 25 January 1779, Martha Johnson entered 200 acres on Dutchman’s Creek in what was then Rowan County, North Carolina.[2]
