Research Notes

Being named John, did not make finding this person's parents an easy task. Thankfully, being aged 39 yrs on the 1861 census and born in Fintray, narrowed the search down to only one. However, following the usual naming pattern, his father should also be John. It was James. There was also a Doctor MD situated in Peterhead in the same period, with the same name and his spouse was named Isabella.

  • A thirty year span search, on Scotlands People for a marriage, up to 1856, for Ewen and variants to any Johnston and variants only brings up two marriages, and only to John, no William.

When I first began my research almost 40 years ago, I was given a copy of the Johnston tree. I decided to check for missing dates. I found that the William named as the father of the William who died in Perthshire, died single and unmarried according to the census. I then looked to the mother.Isabella Ewen...I then tracked all the area finding a sad story with the mother dying when William was 4, and his father (JOHN) dying 3 years later. I HAVE checked every detail and researched back to FIND quite a little surprise. ...Sir William Johnston of Hilton...I have checked every other DETAIL...James's family naming pattern matches exactly ...and John has a son named Thomas. A regular name in the Caskiebien tree. ..Stirnet states that 4 of Sir William's sons died in infancy but I DISAGREE.....
